BBC: Tractor in Level Crossing Collision
A man has been flown to hospital by air ambulance after a train
collided with a tractor at a level crossing.
<http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cambridgeshire/4129398.stm>
The accident, which happened on Sunday afternoon, saw a Central Trains
railway engine collide with the tractor at the crossing at March in
Cambs.
The tractor driver was flown to hospital with head injuries.
The train driver, who suffered chest pains, was not thought to have
suffered any serious injuries. No-one on the train was injured in the
accident.
Both the tractor driver and the train driver were taken to
Peterborough Hospital.
Central Trains said buses would be brought in between Ely and
Peterborough stations and warned that delays were expected.
Central Trains runs services from the Midlands to Norwich.
Network Rail will be looking at the crossing over the next few days
and there may also be a British Transport Police investigation.

The trouble with tractor drivers is that they are slow in motion and
slow in mind.

Gosh, a "railway engine". Must have been a special replacement for the
DMUs they normally run.
But I'm impressed at the speed of action (Ross, take note).
First reported by NRES at 12:44, buses laid on by 13.08 and BBC news
report published at 13.10.
Great work! It can be done. And on a Sunday, too.

It being a Sunday is probably why it can be done speedily.

Re: Tractor in Level Crossing Collision
Our one train per day branch line here on Vancouver Island struck a gravel
truck on Friday, flipping the vehicle onto its side and injuring the truck
driver and one female passenger on the train. Both slightly injured and
released from hospital that afternoon. After about a two hour delay, the
train continued to Victoria. Even though this line only carries one
passenger train each way per day, and possibly one or two freight trains per
week, they still manage to hit vehicles or people between two and half a
dozen times per year.
Level crossing accidents are so common in North America that, unless they
involve the loss of life of say half a dozen school kids, they're not even
mentioned outside the local area. Out latest incident never even made the
Vancouver media, 90 minutes away by ferry.

I doubt if bus companies have drivers sitting around on a Sunday
waiting for crashes. Roland's point is valid in my view.

All they usually hit round my way is grockles' cars, which invariably
come off worst. Makes the Agricultural vehicle driver think they're

No they're not sitting around waiting, but they are potentially available
rather than being on the road already.

When I was young a lorry driver used to think much the same thing,
until he was in the docks and had a close encounter with a train.

They'll have drivers and buses spare as most, if not all routes run
reduced frequencies on a Sunday. During the week/peak times they often
have no spare vehicles or people to drive them.

Spare? Yes. In work? No. While there are very likely to be some
who will come in for some overtime, it takes time to phone around, not
to mention for them to come in to the depot and take the bus to the
required location. An hour would be a reasonable minimum for
arranging all that, I'd say. This appears to have been done in less
than half that.
As the previous poster stated - they're available - but not sitting
around in the depot!

Southern are particularly good at that.
One very cold and snowy Sunday, Southern managed to get busses to take
us all to Polegate to bypass a train which had apparently 'welded
itself to the track' at Hampden Park.
It didn't take long to get the busses on - Well Done Southern.

The buses may already have been on order. I was due to be on the 11:27
Birmingham-Norwich from Nuneaton (11:53) to Leicester, but it was
cancelled. During the ensuing half-hour wait, it was obvious that
several passengers had been intending to travel beyond Leicester (which
was as far as the next train was going), and before that train came in,
there was an announcement that buses would be provided from Leicester.
If that train hadn't been cancelled, it would have been due at March at
14:02.

Interesting how the story evolves. Originally the BBC reported that both
casualties were taken to Peterborough hospital (hopefully not the same
ward!) but now it's one to Peterborough and one to Huntingdon.
