Many Renaults require specialised equipment to check the levels.  On yours 
autodata shows two plugs underneath the box, the one nearest to the wheel is 
the fill and the other the drain.  I have no idea how the are used, perhaps 
there is a tube above the fill one which allows any excess to escape back 
out?

It uses dexron II and needs 4 litres for drain and refill.

On father in laws 98R Safrane 2.0 auto there is a dipstick at the front
nearside of the engine bay with a red handled dipstick.
Never needed to top it up so can't help with that.
