Ticket Query London-Brigg (via ...)
I would like to do a round trip from South London as follows: -
London Kings Cross - Peterbrough
Peterbrough - Sleaford - Lincoln
Lincoln - Doncaster
Doncaster - Barnetby
Barnetby - Brigg - Retford - Sheffield
Sheffield - London St Pancras
Timings work just fine and I'll get a number of routes I need.
Question is, what ticket(s) should I get?
I don't have a problem with Savers etc but don't want to pay a fortune
to do a round trip.
I'm open to suggestions of the best legal, and "slight bend of the
rules but get away with it" ideas.
My first thought would be London - Brigg (any permitted), and explain
that the connections for Brigg were best via Donny and Barnetby if
questioned on the Lincoln - Doncaster - Barnetby Leg? However, this is
no doubt not valid in the Routing guide.
East Midlands Rovers are only availble as a 3 in 8 which would have
covered me north of Bedford and Peterbrough but rather pricey for the
trip.
Would a London - Worksop (or similar between Sheffield and Retford) be
valid via both Lincoln and Leicester? I could then buy Lincloln -
Scunthorpe, and Scuntorpe - Retford CDS or similar, presumably for a
reasonable price.
Sadly, the Lincolnshire Day Ranger is not valid Lincoln - Doncaster -
Barnetby - Brigg - Retford which is a shame.

I haven't checked the cost, but how about a London-Doncaster SVR (any
permitted) and a Sheffield-Barnetby CDR.
The outward saver allows you to make the journey you want to Doncaster,
the outward portion of the CDR gets you to Barnetby, the return portion
gets you to Sheffield and then the return saver gets you home?

Great idea Mark.
London Terminals - Doncaster (any permitted)
SVR £38.95
Sheffield - Barnetby (any permitted)
CDR £8.50
I reckon this is legal too so many thanks.

Brigg has routeing points Barnetby, Doncaster, Lincoln, and Sheffield.
Your route from King's Cross to Doncaster can be done on map EE; the
shortest route to Brigg is then via Barnetby.
Coming back, the shortest route from Brigg to Retford is what you want.
From there you can use maps PS+MM to go via Worksop, Sheffield, and then
the usual MML routes.
So you're fine.

Yes. Routeing point Retford, maps EE+JL, allows via Spalding, Lincoln,
and Gainsborough. Routeing points Nottingham and Sheffield lets you go
back via Leicester.

Don't you have to compare fares?
SVR London-Brigg 50.90
SVR London-Doncaster 59.00
SVR London-Lincoln 48.70 (Any permitted) 50.90 (Retford)
SVR London-Sheffield 51.00
SVR London-Barnetby 60.50
Meaning that the only valid routeing point is Lincoln?

Oops. I'm getting rusty. Quite correct.

For that ticket type, it would seem so.
