Ford Mondeo - Air Con Problem
2000 Ford Mondeo (last of old style) air con problem. Air con green
light comes on but the revs when the car is idle do not drop.

We had the air con re-gassed last week but the problem still persists,
so I plan to take the car back to the shop tomorrow. But I want to
either check a few things beforehand myself, or at least prompt the
shop to take a look at a few things (and at least sound like I know a
little).

Any ideas please?

I've done a bit of googling, and I've seen some suggestions such as
fuse, air con belt, compressor - are these relevant with my symptoms
such as above?

Cheers.

The a/c on this model is almost directly controlled by the switch. Power
from the switch , through the evaporator thermostat towards the compressor,
passes through a relay which the ECU uses to cut the a/c under circumstances
such as engine overheating, and when accelorator position is greater than
90%. Power then passes to a secondary a/c relay in the engine bay fuse box
which actually suplies power to the clutch.

The compressor clutch is inhibited by both the low and high pressure
switches. This is most likely your problem, or lack of power.

If you're sure the a/c definately has gas, you can firstly bypass the LP
switch and see if the compressor engages, and or, run some fused power
direct from the battery to the disconnected clutch wire and see if it then
engages.

Hope this helps in the meantime.

Tim, thanks for your help. I didn't understand a lot of what you said
so I'm currently googling for (hopefully) some pictures of under the
bonnet highlighting a/c components so I can identify where the
compressor clutch is and so then I can hopefully find out how I can
check if it's engaging or not etc.

Err compressor clutch it on the end of the compressor- where the drivebelt
is- its an electro magnetic clutch, which will click quite audibly when it
engages.

Please do not attempt anything you are not familair with doing.

Ah, this explains why in my other googling I have read people asking if
a click or clunk is heard when a/c is turned on. I don't think I've
heard this come to think of it when I just went down and turned the a/c
on earlier (before my post). So am I correct in saying that the cause
of this is either with the LP or HP?

I wont.
