New Virgin advert.
I do occasional projection work at the local cinema, the David Lean at
the Croydon Clocktower if anybody knows it, on the site of the old
Central Croydon station. I was there today, and there was an advert
for Virgin towards the end of the Pearl and Dean reel that I haven't
seen before.

It starts with a shot of an electrified railway, then the Railway
Children run over to the fence, and watch as a Pendolino runs by. Then
there are various other characters from various railway-reated scenes
in old films, that have been matted in to exterior and interior shots
of the new trains. There's something from one of the Bond films, and
from 'Some Like it Hot' for example. Sorry to be a bit vague, but each
time this ran through just as I was making a final check on the other
machine before changing over to the feature, so I couldn't look too
closely at it, and there wasn't time between shows to run the reel
again just for myself.

I don't know if this has been on television yet as I don't have one at
the moment.

Yes, it's been on TV for around a month now. See:

The Clocktower is adjacent to the site of Central Croydon station,
rather than on it: the Queen's Gardens (formerly the Town Hall Gardens)
occupy the site.

It has been on the haunted fish tank and there are some scenes taken from
North By North West.......if imitation is the most sincerest form of
flattery then the add has failed.

Interesting I'd never heard of Central Croydon station before. What
line was it on? And why was it closed?

A short quote:-
----
East Croydon was considered to far away from the commercial and
shopping centre of Croydon so a branch line was opened terminating at
Croydon Central in Katharine Street. The branch line was never very
successful and after opening in January 1868 closed in November 1871.

This small section of railway did however succeed in bringing together
under one ownership a large plot of land in the centre of the town
which had previously belonged to numerous owners. This act started the
subsequent moves which culminated in The Queens Gardens.

Thanks Neil. I can't believe the Victorians thought it was too far to
walk from East Croydon to Katherine Street. People must've been really
lazy back then!

Re: Central Croydon station (was Re: New Virgin advert.)
It re-opened for a few years, I'm not certain of the dates without
looking them up, but I think it was from 1886 to 1890. It had a few
services to Willesden, but I don't know what else.

There are at least two photographs in extistance, one of the exterior,
but I can't remember what it looked like, and one of the interior,
which was in rather poor condition, but which seemed to show two tracks
with side platforms, and, I think, a siding between them, probably used
to allow the locomotive to run round.

If you stand in the low-level part of the Queen's Gardens, with your
back to the Town Hall, the high wall on your left, with Katharine
Street above, is the original retaining wall of the approach cutting to
the station. At what is now the end of this cutting this wall curves
to the right to block the route ahead, with an opening in it leading to
the underground car park and steps up to the street. You can still
clearly see where this new(er) brickwork joins the original. Just
before you reach the end of the cutting there's a plaque high up on the
wall telling its history. I work in the College, so I use this route
quite often.
