Damnit, windscreen crack and MOT is next week
Coming back from brum yesterday I heard a plink on my screen- thought
nothing of it till daylight and its left a bullseye near the edge and a 6
inch L shaped crack above my tax disk, MOT is next week, typical.

I've been googling through windscreen companies but no one offers crack
repair, yet there's kits being offered that supposedly repairs cracks like
this one

http://motonetic.com/crackattack/how2.html

I'm really suspicious why none of the windscreen companies offer crack
repair, only stone chip. If cracks can be repaired as easy as the repair
kit company says, why dont professional companies offer it?

Mine is completely hairline, cannot even get the edge of a blue fag paper in
it, so will need to be spread to get the resin in. Logic says that the more
you spread it, the more the end of the crack will run away further into the
screen, I cant see how it can be done, anyone on the group had success with
crack repair like this?

So far the crack only extends 35mm into the swept area, and the MOT fails at
40mm so I really dont want to mess with it and cause a fail.

Other than that, anyone got any good ideas on cheap screen companies? I just
phoned around and autoglass just quoted me 284 cheapest
all in, National Windscreens 182 all in, Autoglazing co uk 153 all in,
anyone know of better?

Thanks a lot

I had my stone chip done for free and the Autowindscreen guy says that
basically all they can do is put a glue in the crack / chip to stop it
spreading but it has no guarantee. Especially once the freezing weather sets
in.

The only reason I got it done was because the chip kept catching my
attention. After I had it done, the chip looked double the size!! I ended
up just getting the window replaced.

Don't you have windscreen cover on your insurance? It's normally a 50-75 excess
and won't be classed as a claim.

Re: Damnit, windscreen crack and MOT is next week
I think it works a bit like this

A chip can (sometimes) be repaired before it develops into a crack

A crack, once formed, will quickly spread no matter what you do with it

I'm not sure where your tax disc is but maybe, just maybe, its within the
limits for an MOT (some damage is acceptable if it does not obscure the
drivers vision) - might be worth looking at what the AA, RAC or DVLA web
sites say - I'm sure I've seen a little diagram somewhere that illustrates
whats what ..

or have a look at this http://www.motuk.com/mot_manual/6-1.asp - found by
typing MOT Windscreen damage into yahoo

If you have normal fully comp insurance, the likes of Autoglass will
repair it free or replace it for 50.

first up, is it within the swept area of the wiper blades?
if not then don't worry

Re: Damnit, windscreen crack and MOT is next week
Thanks for the replies all - yes it does encroach into the swept area, only
by 30mm or so, so far, as far as the regs say that's within the 40mm
acceptable - as long as it doesn't get bigger by next week.

If it does spread, I did think of getting a shorter wiper blade for the
passenger side, that way it'll only be 15mm or so into the swept area.

No I don't have FC insurance, usually don't have the need for it on a 10yo
car. I'm going to have to replace it sooner or later, just would prefer to
sort it out after the MOT as I don't know what other expense that's going to
show up.

So I guess no-one has any experience of actual crack repair? I still think
its just going to make it run further as soon as I try to spread it.

glue
it should stop the crack from getting bigger BUT be aware that as soon as
you start driving the actual shack of the chassis can spread the crak in
seconds
avoid speed humps at the very least

If the windscreen is not bonded (i.e. just uses an old style rubber
seal) you could probably get another windscreen from a breakers and
fit it yourself (It's not that hard in my (limited) experience). I
think I paid 15 for one from a fiat uno. I've never DIYed a bonded
screen though. I think you need some sort of hot knife tool just to
get the old one out.

Thanks for the reply Jim, unfortunately yes its bonded. Workshop manual
goes on about hot knives or cheese wire type of arrangements to remove it

Bonded screens are a right pain to change and tend to be more stressed than the
old style so the crack is more likely to spread.
