My 97 1.9 TD Xantia is making a knocking sound at the front - 
particularly on bumpy roads. Are there any common faults that I should 
be looking for?

Track rod end worn.
Possibly anti roll bar bushes knacked.

drop links that connect antiroll bar to front struts, bottom ball joint
usually goes, try to lever it apart with a bit of wood under the wishbone
and you'll probably see loads of movement. 15 each from GSF

On my sadly departed XM I could get a knocking sound from virtually no play 
in the drop links. I bought a set from a local spares shop and they knocked 
from new. The play in the new drop links was less than 1mm. I got my money 
back and had a set fitted for me by a local specialist, almost as cheaply as 
buying them and fitting them myself.
