Escape to Hertfordshire / Herefordshire Poster
Does anyone on the group have a photograph of the poster mentioned by
Christian Wolmar in
<http://www.christianwolmar.co.uk/rail/515.shtml> that they could share
with me, please?

-------------------------------------
While I am on the subject of the ridiculously named 'one', when you next
visit Liverpool Street, check out the 'Escape to Hertfordshire' poster
placed by 'one' railway near the ticket office. It shows an idyllic
scene of a ruined castle near a river. As reader Roger Backhouse points
out, it seems a bit unlikely for Hertfordshire which is not replete with
castles or rivers.

Indeed the castle is Goodrich, in Herefordshire on the River Wye. One
suspects that someone in the design department didn't know their
Hereford from their Hertford - only 'one' letter different, of course.

Doesn't Hertford have a Castle of some sort (the much rebuilt sort I
suspect)?

I dont have a photo, but what I don't understand is why 'one' would
made a poster advertising Herefordshire when they don't even go there.

There is quite a good castle at Berkhamsted - just by the station.

But it's not the same sort of castle as Berkhamsted.

And Waytemore Castle in the centre of Bishop's Stortford. You should
get out more!

Do you mean that you cannot be married in Berkhamsted Castle?

Isn't Bishop's Stortford in Essex?

It is just on the Hertfordshire side of the border but no doubt spilling
over. It is a Post Town so it should be quoted in postal addresses and that
will include some places in Essex. So as people still tend to throw in the
county as well you'll see lots of references to Bishop's Stortford, Essex in
addresses.

Didn't look at a map - just always associated it with that county I try to
avoid driving in. See Graham J's reply.

It's where Hertfordshire Police used to exile those officers who in
senior management's bad books.

Curiously, Essex Police used Harlow Division (and, in particular,
Saffron Walden) in much the same way.

They were advertising Hertfordshire, but mistakenly chose an
illustration of a place in Herefordshire.
