Geoghegan
Does anyone know how to pronounce the surname of Samuel Geoghegan,
designer of the locos on the Guinness brewery system? When I was at
Tywyn last week I asked the museum custodian, but he had no idea.

My mate from Shropshire with surname spelt thus pronounces his surname
"Gogan".

Gochan [where the ch is the guttural sound, as in the German "ach"]?

I believe the Scots spelling is Gaughan, as in Dick Gaughan, the folk
musician.

It rather depends on the route that the surname has taken from Ireland
and how long ago it left IYSWIM.

Re: Geoghegan
As an exile from the "ould sod", I promise you it's Gay-gan.

As in Simon Geoghegan, who once played on the wing for Ireland, but had no
idea what a rugby ball looked like as the Irish pack in those days were
quite unable to win any ball!

There's nothing "right" or "wrong" when it comes to the way words -
especially names - are pronounced.

Au contraire - he was quite well acquainted with the ball, but had no
idea what a straight line looked like :-)

I thought that was what I was trying to convey - especially as I put a
smiley and a url to clarify. No offence meant.

Ho hum.

I'm reminded of the Peter Cook & Dudley Moore sketch (from memory):

Interviewer: Good morning Mr Luxury-Yacht

Interviewee: No, my name is SPELT Luxury-Yacht but it is PRONOUNCED
Throat-Warbler-Mangrove...

Re: Geoghegan
Charlie - he only saw the ball when playing for Bath - not when he was on
the Irish team :-)

Pre "professional" days of course. When the Irish front row breathed on the
opposition, they all fell over drunk!
