These New Desire Oh`s
Having been wizzing up & down the West Coast this week on liners I have
noticed that at least 2 of these new 350 units now have rather horrible
looking lime green NAMEPLATES fitted 350115 + 1 other , also noted that
which ever depot are looking after them like putting them in certain
order ie 05+15 09+19 etc I presume this will wear off shortly !
New shed at Northampton coming along , just in time to empty the
toilets next year !
Enjoy

Anyone know what names have been applied? I hope it's nothing silly,
such as "We won the bid 2012"!

I can't remember - but I seem to recall they are Greek Gods or something?
The plates also carry the generic branding "West Coast Desiro" in smaller
type - which I'm very pleased with as it was my suggestion that they get
called this. It was never an "official" decision as far as I know, but I
have a recording of an interview I was doing with Siemens back in January
when I said: "As they will be shared by at least 2 TOCs they could do with
an overall brand identity - like West Coast Desiros" and then I said that I
would use the title as often as possible to see if it got picked up - so
since then I've used it in everything I've written and in conversations with
Silverlink, Central trains etc. as if it were official and it seems to have
worked! (I have the recording archived in case it did work!).
I gather there was a small, low key, protest from Virgin which claimed it
owned the "West Coast" identity, which was rebuffed. But I haven't had
official confirmation of this.
I'll try to get a note of the names (unless someone else posts them first).

Seems rather cheeky, considering that the franchise name is Inter City West
Coast and that Virgin are only the incumbent operator, not the owner of the
name!

I'd have gone for "National Rail" branding with the BR logo in a
circle to fit with its recent usage. "West Coast Desiro" is fine on a
nameplate (as I think most people know that these don't always relate
to what the service actually is, as they've been used for years), but
I wouldn't like these to be promoted as "West Coast Desiro services"
as it adds another confusing train classification when we really need
to be reducing those.
Indeed, the livery itself is not far from[1] what I suggested for a NR
livery on this very group some time ago...a lurker's work, perhaps?
As to the units themselves, I went to London today[2], but sadly
didn't encounter any in service; all were parked up in Bletchley CS.
[1] ISTR my suggestion involved a black window band with a 6" dark
blue stripe below it, but otherwise the same.
[2] Didn't really notice a significant additional police presence,
incidentally, nor was Oxford Street any quieter than usual, though the
SS train into London didn't seem quite as busy as a normal Saturday.

The tubes certainly seemed as busy as normal yesterday, but both
Paddington and Waterloo had lots of Metropolian Police around as well
as the normal BTP.

I wouldn't really have noticed Euston as I went straight from the
suburban platforms to the Tube. There were two police officers by the
main entrance to the Tube ticket hall, but that's not remarkable in
itself.

Like the people who named the Woodhead electrics,
they seem to be mixing mythical gods with real
historical people.

Re: These New Desire Oh`s
tony! how and why would VT protest about it owning the west coast
identity?
i mean
if they had trademarked it then perhaps they would have a leg to stand
on but not
otherwise i guess.
