It is 15 years since I was there but the best advice I can give is to
stay on the old road rather than the interstate (or whatever the new
road is called) when approaching the loop. You will find a magnificent
overview of the loop and easy parking. As to train times....as with
any US railroad, especially out west, god only knows unless you have a
scanner, and would that be wise these days?

Hi Andy

There are several regular photographers of Tehachapi area on
alt.binaries.pictures.rail. They have answered this question several times
over the past few years, but most (all of the real railway enthusiast
photographers, in my experience) of the guys on the group are helpful and
friendly. Suggest you post your request there mentioning you're going from
UK to USA.

Re: TEHACHAPI
I visited in 1999. I would assume that you have the same problem as I had,
in that I was unable to find a decent map of the area before leaving the UK.
There were some good road maps available locally when I arrived. I settled
on DeLorme, which cost 16.95 USD each for the Southern and Central
California Atlas and Gazetteer and the Northern California Atlas and
Gazetteer.

These maps are detailed, showing all roads, railways (with ownership), and
contours. The scale is 1:150,000.

It is also important to note that, unless you have specifically arranged for
it, insurance for a hire car is unlikely to cover use over un-metalled
(dirt) roads.

I found that driving over roads away from the main centres, other than
Motorway equivalent highways, was an enjoyable experience.

Dave Wilcox.

Re: TEHACHAPI
Regarding maps- try Stanfords, which is not far from Charing Cross, on Long
Acre- we've found all sorts there.
