Newcastle to Carlisle and then to somewhere in Scotland (Stranraer?)
tends to be a Cl156 in SPT livery. Gets a long stop in Carlisle where it
changes from Northern Trains (NCL -> Carlisle) into an SPT service to
head into Scotland.

They don't get to Glasgow, however
(http://www.livedepartureboards.co.uk/ldb/train.aspx?T=NWCSTLE+&J=3306056&R=0
if you get it before 1710ish today).

NCL -> Glasgow tends to be either VT (220/221) or GNER (HST or 91) via
Edinburgh.

well we are just going as far as Gretna, so it will likely be an SPT 156?

thanks

Carlisle to Newcastle is mostly Pacers.

The livery depends on what's available on the day - you're just as
likely to find a First ScotRail-liveried unit on any route into or
out of Glasgow Central as an SPT-liveried one. That applies to the
local services (e.g. Glasgow-Paisley Canal) as well.

New Cumnock is the SPT boundary station, so strictly speaking the
service from Carlisle is a ScotRail one until New Cumnock, then
an SPT-supported one from there.

So the 06:54 SX Newcastle - Glasgow (and all the others) is an Northern
Service to Carlisle, a ScotRail service to New Cumnock and a SPT one from
there.

One service with three different 'operators'. Can anyone beat that?

You're correct to use the quotes: SPT isn't a TOC as we know it -
ScotRail operates the services to timetables and fares specified
by SPT.
