Virgin Value purchasing question
Something that I can't find a definite answer to: can I buy a Virgin
Value ticket over the counter at Kidderminster station (run by Central
Trains), or do I have to go to a Virgin station? I know that the
obvious answer to this is "go to Kidderminster and ask them", but for
various reasons too boring to relate it would be immensely useful to
know *beforehand* whether I'm wasting my time. Thanks.

To add to this: for reasons again too dull to get into, I absolutely do
not want to use plastic. In other words, if these tickets can *only* be
bought online or by phone, they'll be no use to me. I want to know if I
can go to a station and buy them with cash.

According to nationalrail.co.uk, Kidderminster don't do reservations at
all, so the answer would be no.

However you *can* buy them over the counter at any station that does
do reservations. Doesn't have to be a VT one.

Kidderminster will happily sell you VV tickets (provided the quota is
available). They have tribute now, and most of the staff there are very
good. Failing that, pop down the road to see me at Worcester **** Street,
and visit us.

As long as it has been upgraded from Aptis to Tribute, yes, it can
sell them.

I _believe_ that all CT stations have Tribute now.

when i was after VV tickets from my local central station they told me
they had a quota of 5 tickets per train - presumeably just for that
station alone.

You should check online with virgin first as they should have the
largest quota of tickets.

Is this some new "feature" of NRS then? [The ability to restrict the
number of seats a given outlet can sell, that is] Certainly didn't
happen with CRS...

I don't believe single stations have a quota, but I believe
TheTrainLine and stations may have had separate quotas for some ticket
types for some time.

In the "good old days" of CRS, each ticket type had a specific quota
code attached to it (e.g. VV for Virgin Value 14, RR for VV14 with a
Railcard).

The exact numbers are determined by the TOC that operates the service,
but I don't recall any mention in the CRS Manual of it being possible to
configure different availability depending on the outlet.

Having said that, however, it was entirely possible to reserve out of
the "wrong" quota and do a "manual override" to produce the ticket (even
easier with APTIS).

Cheers,

Barry

Thanks, everyone. I shall give it a go, and report back on what
happens!
