Penalty Fares
A commuter was shown on Meridian Tonight being charged a Penalty Fare at
Reading. Apparently he travelled from Wokingham.
I thought on the North Downs Line section of the FGWL network Penalty Fares
did not apply?

Wokingham is staffed and on SWT territory. PFs apply.

Re: Penalty Fares
They don't. Either
1) Merridian was wrong
or (much more likely)
2) The thugs at Reading don't have a clue (as usual)
He would have to queue up at the excess fare window and pay the correct
amount with no discounts etc. (I assume the Wokingham ticket office was
open)

To be fair to Meridian, I thought it was FWGL, but as The Doctor pointed out
Wokingham is SWT staffed. So if he had got on at say, Crowthorne, he would
have been OK at Reading?

No doubt whinging to the TV cameras.
I have absolutely no sympathy for anyone caught travelling without a
ticket.
IMHO £20 is too low - it should be £50. Alternatvely hang 'em by the
balls.
I fully applaud Central's name and shame scheme too.

The boundaries seem to change - or at least that is the impression I
get from the announcements I hear on Southern.
The announcement of our entry into a penalty fare zone seems to crop up
at all sorts of places, the best is just after Polegate station, which
I guess (probably wrongly) means that you can techincally not get
charged until you reach that point?
The fare has gone up too. It's £20 now.

I can't remember who it is, but a company used to (& may still do), put
up posters saying "Your local losers," which was rather amusing. But
don't forget, only someone going to court for non-payment can be 'named
& shamed.'

Tyne and Wear Metro do this.

Merseyrail claimed to do something similar once, but sadly all the
pictures were recognisable as being, umm, their RPI squad[1]. Oops.
[1] At the time there was only one such group, so they were easily
identified, and were occasionally noted filling in at ticket offices.
