UK Midweeks 25.7.05
Source: Music Week

New Warner Bros signing Daniel Powter looks set to open his chart account
with a Top Five entry this weekend, with retail reports suggesting his
debut single Bad Day is outselling Eminems hotly-tipped Ass Like That,
also released yesterday.

However, both new singles look unlikely to disrupt the continuing success
of James Blunt and 2Pac feat. Elton John, who are likely to resume their
positions at one and two respectively.

Outside the Top 10, Bananaramas Move In My Direction (A&G) will give the
duo their first hit single since 1993s More More More, while Nine Inch
Nails Only (Interscope) and Uniting Nations You & Me (Gusto) will settle
for a Top 20 debut. Lower down the chart, Natalie Imbruglia and Tony
Christie look unlikely to consolidate their recent success, with their new
singles currently struggling to break into the top 25.

James Blunt, Coldplay, Michael Jackson, Kaiser Chiefs and Faithless
continue to dominate the albums market, while new entries from Crazy Frog
(Gut) and Editors (Kitchenware) are both contending for a Top Ten debut. In
a largely static chart, other possible new entries come from Alanis
Morrisettes Jagged Little Pill Acoustic (Maverick), The Stands Horse
Fabulous (Echo) and Clors self-titled debut (Regal).

Interesting, but given that physical sales make up only 40-45% of the
chart now, less useful than they used to be.

No doubt he'll still be #1, though.

So she should be in the top 30 overall, hopefully.

Maybe they should have tried publicizing their new single - no video, no
airplay that I've heard.

But not for long, on those sales... :)

BTW, I think everyone must be on their summer hols - the volume here has
been pitiful for the last 2 weeks.

They had a live session on Radio 2's Ken Bruce show last week.

This week, their album was 'album of the week' on the same show
so it was a different track every day.

So although Ken wasn't playing their new single to death, there has
been a fair bit of Madness.

How come you can't stand them any more?

They're on TOTP this week, would have been better if they were on last
week's show.

They seem trite & trivial now, and their music only designed to appeal
to an adolescent audience.

I'd have thought that by getting so much R2 coverage, they would
be trying to appeal to a rather more mature audience.
It's just you under 40's who don't like them.

Wait two weeks :-)

Except that 'Shame & Scandal' was originally a hit for Lance Percival. How
many adolescents do you think have any idea who he was? ;-)
It's interesting that you complain about them being trivial too, as many say
that what did for them in their original career was when they started
writing serious songs like 'Uncle Sam' and 'Yesterday's Men'; that's not an
assesment I entirely agree with, but it's a common one.

As it happens, I think this new single is pretty weak too, but I think
that's a common problem when bands do covers albums - it's hard to avoid the
suspicion that they're more fun to make than to listen to. With a band as
venerable as Madness, there's also the problem that they tend to have
covered all the songs they really want to already. I'm also quite
disappointed by the performance in this instance; it's a cliche that they
developed their nutty sound by failing to emulate their influences, but if
anything they now sound too proficient.

Still, their last comeback material was a lot better than could reasonably
have been expected, so their may be hope for them yet. They're still a great
live attraction by all accounts.

Probably, as Em tends to be pretty steady all week long - not that we have
any form on Powter yet, of course.
Mind you, my extended forecast for that one was only Top 40, so what do I
know?

Me too, pretty much, although I thought Natalie might go Top 20 - depending
on airplay etc in the past couple of weeks, which I wasn't able to judge.

Though to be fair, after summer 1983 their career was on the wane. Their
commercial success declined in 1984 then nosedived in 1985/6. It was at
this stage that they changed direction with a more mature sound, but the
writing was on the wall by then.

British satirist of the early 60s, who used to sing topical calypsos on That
Was The Week That Was. As of five years ago, he's still alive and working
the after-dinner-speaking circuit.

Anyway, not a name immediately recogniseable to most teenagers, I'll bet.

OK, now that I can't account for. But I dispute that you can pinpoint

That it got that high. It's notoriously tricky to convert a novelty hit into
a successful album.
