A new freight trial has begun by freightliner heavy-haul moving coal from
ellesmere port to fiddlers ferry power station via latchford (warrington)
using a pair of 66,s top and tailed..

Thanks for the info. Presumably top and tail is required for reversing
moves. This used to be achieved with top and tail 20s so I wonder how
the economics of using brand new locos will work out?

I wonder how the economics of this compare to the economics of the
driver walking beside the rear of the train and controlling the
locomotive by radio while propelling the train.
If this is too "radical" then how about another member of staff
giving instructions by voice radio, if hand signals are not possible
due to curvature?
I think there are advantages to coal train "multiple units" in some
circumstances. However, both locomotives should be under power for
this to make sense in my view.

I will always explain revoked keys, unless the UK government
prevents me by using the RIP Act 2000.

Re: new freight trial
Polish coal shipped to Hunterston then transhipped to Manisty Wharf.
Trial started off as one class 66, then went to top & tail although
Fridays was double headded!
