Allerton
Local notices state that Allerton station will close on 1 August 2005,
whilst it is to be rebuilt as South Liverpool Parkway. It is due to reopen
in June 2006.

TEN months to rebuild a fairly minor station ?? Is that progress and modern
technology? And why the need to close it during the rebuilding?. I don't
recall Birmingham New Street or London Euston being totally closed for
nearly a year when they suffered much bigger reconstructions.Fortunately,
it is not my local station, and there is nearby Garston for passengers to
Liverpool city centre, but I don't imagine the shut-down will help encourage
any new passengers for other destinations.

It's supposed to re-open in December according to the local press.

No doubt Health & Safety concerns play a part in this
However it should be quite a transformation from just a basic station
with just a basic local train service. To a station which will be served
by all operators except Virgin, similarly a low level station for the
resited Garston station and hence become a local rail-head as well as a
Park & Ride and Airport link service.

Well, I've read the PDF leaflet at
http://www.northernrail.org/images/upload/Allerton%20closure.pdf and the
arrangements seem to be as follows:

For Liverpool City Centre: use trains from Garston to Liverpool Central.

For Warrington or Manchester: train from Garston to Hunts Cross for onward
connection.

For Mossley Hill or Edge Hill: use Arriva bus service 80 to West Allerton and
pick up the train there.

In the short-term you're almost certainly correct, but I think the reopening
as Liverpool South Parkway with improved connections from Merseyrail
Electrics, a better service towards Manchester and Crewe (assuming CT and TPX
services will call at the Parkway; I imagine Merseytravel will try and
persuade them that it's worthwhile for them to do so), airport bus link and
park and ride will encourage a great deal more passengers.

It's a completely new station being built on a new site, a major boost for
that art of Liverpool. AFAIAA Allerton does not re-open, South Parkway
replaces it and is different and brand new, and quite big.

No, Allerton effectively closes for rebuilding then reopens, Garston is
replaced by new platforms, and the whole sh'bang renamed Liverpool
South Parkway.

There's an article about it in the July MR. Liverpool South Parkway will
consist of 2 platforms on the Liverpool Central to Hunts Cross line, about
300 metres east of the present Garston station, which they will replace, and
4 platforms on the site of Allerton Station on the Lime Street to Runcorn
line. Platforms 1,2 and 3 are being taken down to their foundations and
rebuilt, and platform 4 has been demolished to allow construction of a
completely new platfrom.
