Pendolino by a knockout
Yesterday - despite the mad mullahs - I went to London to ride the last
RMs on Routes 14 and 22. Great atmosphere and London was buzzing
despite the outrages. Just a shame that there are only three routes
left now.
10.45 ex Piccadilly - food service in first - usual tea and coffee
bacon rolls and fruit juice - that's it - no alcohol, no water - no
fruit juice. Arrived about six early.
Return in the evening - baked potato with splodge, or egg and spinach
sarnies, with the usual hot drinks, water or wine, and alcoholic. I had
already eaten at the Wong Kei in anticipation of what passes for a food
service on the WCML these days so I contented myself with G & Ts.
Who on God's earth devises these menus?? After meetings in London going
on into the evening in the 90s a steak au poivre was just the ticket on
the 20.00 Holyhead and change at Crewe - now unless you want an insult
to your taste buds just pretend there isn't food out of Euston after
brekkers.
The aircon in my coach was on in spades. In the next it certainly
wasn't as I ambled through to the loo. No complaints there - clean - no
smell.
On the way back however I was literally knocked for six as I tailgated
the steward through the door into the passenger cabin from the
vestibule. You see I am used to those wonderful old Mk IIs and IIIs so
despised by many here. They had pressure pads so that an approaching
footfall held the door open - Pendolinos don't and I got a substantial
clout on the temple. ( That's no reason for a round of applause form
you lot ;-}
Is this a design omission? because if it is - it is a serious one and
one from which a frail passenger may well receive a real injury.

Not despised by me.

It is a design "feature", one which several people here have sought
to defend. They have also criticised me for criticising this
"feature".

In 22xs they soon started announcing how the doors work and warning
people not to stand in them.

"To open the internal doors press the button. The door will close after
a period no matter who or what may be in its way - to retrieve your
trapped limb press the button again"

Of course, while the doors are open the button is obscured, but even so
there is no warning of the impending Branson Bash!
Going back to the Wong Kei, we were introduced to it in 1983 by Bill
from Hong Kong whilst on a course at Willesden Poly. You show us the
best Chinese, we'll show you the seamier side of London! We also set
the record for Mill Hill Broadway to Leeds town hall in a beamer!
Best memories :-
After a client complained that the meal delivered wasn't his "You
order, you eat - you pay!"
After the place appeared in the Standard's good food guide I was
present when a crowd of yuppies appeared and met the "upstairs -
downstairs" man.
He halted their progress in the usual manner and the leader turned to
his cohort and announced "Fxxking rude little man!"
The host looked him up and down and announced - "I not fxxking rude -
you fxxking rude. Now fxxk off out!"
Magic - pure magic!!! and great and cheap fodder too!

What is this thing about Oriental Restaurants which have stupid names when
pronounced as English words? We used to have Indian Restaurants with the
names of Mahatma Cote, and Arji Bhaji - and there was also the Italian
Costalottis.

Did you used to go to Argate, on the Costa Lotless, for your holidays?
All the comforts of home!

hehe - for added entertainment try one (or if you're brave, all) of the
following:
1) Pretend the table is a drum and use the chopsticks to play it.
2) Tell the upstairs upstairs man that you don't want to go upstairs.
3) Attempt to pay by cheque. Then attempt to pay by credit card.
