Planning on going to Brighton today, is a weekend first available on the
train???

Accomodation on 377s is identical in first or standard. The only reason for
first on southern is to get a seat in the peak plus complimentary coffee
and newspapers. At weekends it would be cheaper to buy a coffee and
newspaper

Thameslink do one - £3 single or £5 day return. Also valid off peak
in the week.
Buy before boarding - not available on the train.

That's not bad at all.
Does that mean you can upgrade on Thameslink, and then use the ticket
(lets say it's a One Day Travel Card) to return on a Southern train and
use their 'first'?

Yep see what you mean.. bought one in advance, but no bloody difference.
Still on the way home the guard on the SWT 159 accepted our Southern only
upgrade.

Well I went first on Thamesink (unrefurbished) and it was like a
toilet.
Seat postion in relation to the windows was worse than in standard and
once standard filled up everyone piled into the first class anyway.
Comments heard included: "I wouldn't pay extra to sit in here" and
"Look at the state of the seats". Felt a bit of a dick really.
