Disused elevated railway in London
While channel surfing between the cricket and Sky News coverage of the
latest incidents in London, I saw something which intrigued me. One of
the helicopter shots was of what appeared to be an abandoned elevated
railway. It looked like the tracks had been removed long ago. Which line
was this? I'm amazed that such real estate could go unused so close to
central London.
Cheers

I saw that as well and was wondering what it was! It looked very wide.

There are quite a few stretches of abandoned trackbed in London, and
some of them are indeed elevated. If it was connected with the events in
London, then it could have been something in the Shepherds Bush area.
Have a look at: http://web.ukonline.co.uk/cj.tolley/rjd/rjd-039.htm
and see if it was anything on there, like the blue line.

It could well be the line out of Broad Street, which is near the bus
that was targetted.

Most likely the Grove Road connection from the District Line to
Kensington Olympia and the Hammersmith & City Line (using modern
names, it was an LSWR line).

Yes, if it was the footage I saw, it was the bridge carrying the line
over Old Street / Hackney Road (near the white church whose name escapes
me). To be used for the ELL extension to Dalston.

Just known by all (including the nos. 35 and 47 buses) as Shoreditch
Church, although I think it's actually St Leonard's.

Is that a disused station, with island platform, spang in the middle?

Yes, that is the former Shoreditch station. For on-site photos see:

IIRC it was in the Oval area, the helo was stooging around south London and
the Isle of Dogs, wasn't allowed over central London for obvious reasons

That looks a lot like it. Even if part of it will be used for the ELL
extension, I'm surprised it's remained intact for the best part of 20
years. I'd have thought the land would be worth a fortune.

Thankfully it would seem there are a few people in the planning game
who realise the benefit of safeguarding infrastructure and land for
future use.
I think the extended East London Line will be very useful and popular,
providing a new north - south link avoiding central London.
