green arrow update?
What's the verdict on 60800 Green Arrow? How bad is the damage and what
plans to repair it?
Im sure i head that they can make the modification to using 3 separate
cylinders but again it's all down to cost.
So what do you know as it seems to be very quiet on the subject.

That's an awful big modification from design and potentially an
awful big loss of historical information. If that's what it requires
to get it running then stuffing-and-mounting might be the more
appropriate alternative. I'd be worried if a museum let that kind
of hacking-about be perpetrated without a very well-defined path
back to "unconverted" condition once running days are over (and
I'm sure the NRM wouldn't consider going down that road unless they
had exactly such a plan).

The main qualifier which ensured Green Arrow went on the list for
preservation in the first instance, was the monobloc cylinder
casting.
After it had been designated for official preservation, instructions
were issued that a failure of this casting should mean withdrawal,
rather than repair and return to service with three separate castings.

If this is the case, it is a very sad day for all enthusiasts, as there is
nothing
as impressive as the sight and sound (and smell) of a fully working steam
engine 'up-close-and-personal'! Especially such a rare example as the
first, and last surviving, Gresley V2.
I have collected as much as I can of related material on the Green Arrow
since my Childhood, and was priviledged to be allowed in the cab at the
Bluebell Railway in 2003. I hope this is not the last active season for the
Green Arrow - it has always been considered as part of our family!
David.
