Renault Safrane, 2.0 lt RT L reg, , this car did drive sound,
battery went flat, took off to charge and now it won't start, some one said
it was the immobiliser, god knows

You better ask him then!

Renaults do have a habit of loosing sync with the key and immobilzer. Its  a
dealer job to 're-align' them i'm afriad.

Autodata 2004 says:
Take the cover off the key head, you should see a number. If it is 5
digits, the key should not need programming. If it's 8 digits, put the
key in the ignition - don't turn it on, and press the central locking
button for more than 5 seconds.
Otherwise the OP is right, it's a dealer job.
