The August MR suggests that DMUs will take over in the Autumn, possibly
using a 170+158 formation (a 170 on its own would not have enough seats, and
2x170 is too long for the platforms). In turn, they will be replaced next
year by the return of the 322s, after refurbishment.

In light of this:

<news:d3peea$or5$1$8300dec7@news.beeb.net> aka
<http://groups.google.co.uk/group/uk.railway/msg/1b4276246736bf48>

do we know which 170s are earmarked for this (and one might want to
argue about the meaning of "permanent"!).

MR also suggest that First Scotrail are more likely to use the ex-Hull
Trains 170s on the Highland main line to Inverness in view of their low
density seating and bar car.

That would be sensible. However, they have already run on Edinburgh
suburban services.

Re: North Berwick
If i were in charge, i'd get those mk3 loco hauled trains (off north
berwick and Northampton cobblers) and place them on the longer distance
trent valley services desiro's are forming. Desiro's would be better at
home on the north berwick branch and on general silverlink/Central
train services, they're nice trains an all but they're not exactly
'Inter-City' are they? That way passengers at Nuneaton, Tamworth and
Lichfield are still getting spacious 110mph IC trains as they have been
for the past 30 years or so.

I wouldn't. The acceleration of a modern MU is required to allow the
stopping services to operate without getting in the way of the IC
service, and you want 1/3-2/3 door layout for Silverlink's
heavily-loaded commuter services.

Are Silverlink/Virgin still running LHCS services? I think it was Tony Miles
who said the last one would run on 15th July ...

Does that mean passengers have been able to have a wee dram on the way
to Drem? ;-)

Hmm, that would present difficulties in respect of revenue protection
(unless it was rostered for two people - one per unit).

Why can't 2x158s be used?

Sadly the bars are closed on local services, including the one I saw
this morning. The trains have now been painted in pink livery, which
looks much worse than the green and white livery they were in.
However the fist class seats remain and look a bit more luxurious
than the second class ones.

I presume they are trying them out on local services before letting
them on longer distance services.
