blah blah
Hi,

To update. There is a new shoot owner and a new keeper at the shoot I have
been moaning about for last three or so years. I've met the two and they
seem quite reasonable people. (The previous shoot owner was a most
unreasonable man, his ex-keeper a nice enough bloke - I always blame the
officers, not the troops)

However, I came about this quote from Simon Hart of BASC in Monday's local
newspaper. Western Morning News - = Devon and Cornwall.

Any comments?

David Bellamy says:

and everything it contains, the flowers, the wildlife and the songbirds,
would have disappeared long ago".

There was plenty of beautiful countryside and everything it contains,
the flowers, the wildlife and the songbirds. Places I used to hunt when
I was a kid, places were I used to tickle trout, shoot rabbits, camp and
enjoy my childhood. These places have disappeared, they didn't have any
pheasants. On the other hand there are places I used to go beating on as
a kid, they are still there. Makes me think.

Where I lived as a kid, there were no pheasants (in the mountains of Co
Fermanagh, up agaist the border with Sligo and the Republic) But lots of
wildlife, trout, perch, salmon, ducks, rabbits, corncrakes, etc. There are
virtually no pheasants there still, but still lots of wildlife, etc, and
(God forbid) early morning corncrakes.

Being Ulster, the Prods would have seen the shooting of pheasants as
"venal", and the Catholics were, well, all Fenians and Sinn Feiners, so
never could get a shotgun licence.

Not sure now-a-days but me thinks the area might have been a little too
volatile to occupy.

It was, but we were allowed to use SLR/GPMG and LMG for hunting.
