Major rattle/knock from 2.5 TD Omega manual gearbox at switch-off.
She's an S-reg with 230,000m on the clock, but is well-maintained (from 10
months old).
This knock/rattle only occurs at stalling point or switch-off.
I've been underneath and it's definitely coming from the gearbox.
It happens with the clutch engaged or disengaged - in neutral or in gear.
Could it still be a clutch component ?
Or is it likely to be the box - or the spigot (if it has one) ?
I'm at a total loss.
TIA

Actually, I think the gearbox oil may be low and/or the clutch slave
cylinder (attached to gearbox input shaft) maybe clanking about and leaking.

No.
Replaced recently.
I'll find out whether or not it IS the gearbox input shaft seal leaking,
today.

Did you replace all of them or just one?

All 3 of them.
Emptied the gearbox today - looked like a normal amount of oil.
Refilled it - but it still rattles like a diamond-back (at stall point) and
stays rattling unless revs are applied.
No leaks from the bellhousing end of things.
Looks like my initial suspicion of gearbox wear could be right.
It's still a bit weird though, since box and clutch work flawlessly.

Does it stop if you apply a little pressure to the clutch pedal if so it
could be the release bearing or input shaft thats making the noise.

No, that's the weird thing.
It carries on regardless, in gear or out of gear, clutch out or in.
WTF ?

In an earlier post you said it was poss the exhaust. Try the old big
screwdriver test. place it against your ear at the handle end and then use
the point as a probe to try and locate the exact point of the noise it could
just be the exhaust baffles rattling or the cat breaking up or heaven forbid
low oil pressure at low revs.

I can hear it emanating from the two holes in the bottom of the bellhousing.
It's coming from the box 1,000,000%
I'm just gunna have to drop the box.

Surely then it's not the 'box, as that's effectively disconnected from
the engine when you depress the clutch. So it comes back to a mechanical
knock. Gearbox mounting? Also back to the exhaust - if it's anything
like the 2.0 petrol, it's mounted to the gearbox through rubber grommets
- perhaps these have split?

Agreed.
It's just my paranoia about a stuffed box showing through.
The clutch slave cylinder (concentric with the input shaft) could be the
culprit, but it seems unlikely that the clutch would work so flawlessly if
it were.
Same applies to the clutch assembly itself - only more so.
The exhaust pipe's well clear of the box, but I'm gunna check the gearbox
crossmember-mount nuts today.
So it comes back to a

It's the clutch.
Haven't dropped the box to check yet, but it's the clutch/release mechanism.
