Totally OT: B & B
I am asking this question as obviously theses groups are patronised by all
areas of the country.
We are going on holiday to Newquay in early August and we were thinking of
stopping overnight in the Taunton / Exeter area, to make the long journey
easier on my two young boys (and to keep me and wifey sane!). Does anybody
know of a decent B & B in that area, preferably just off the M5 or on the
A30. It doesn't have to be free or a bargain, but it could be if necessary
;-).
Many thanks
John

Try the university, they usually have rooms over the summer break.

I suspect that your best bet may be to use the Travel Inn/PremierLodge
thingy - whatever its called just north of Bridgewater. There aren't
many once you get past Bristol.
It will probably be cheaper in the long run as you should be able to get
a family room and you pay for the room not the number of bodies in it.
You can arrive at whatever time of night you need to and as its room
only you can leave pretty well as early as you want if you want to avoid
travelling in the heat of the day. If you leave really early and your
boys are not a pair of gannets who demand to be fed as soon as their
eyes open ;o) then you can get an hour or so down the road before the
kids start to say they are hungry.
I find a breakfast stop is a better use of time than having to stop mid
morning to let the kids run around and let off a bit of steam as there
is less urgency to get on the road again.
Obviously you'll need to book in advance.
Hope this helps

We used the Holiday Inn Express last year. Really a 'lodge' style
operation but quite cheap for a family room (double bed and a sofa that
converts to two singles). On the eastern side, on the main road (we used
it as a jumping off point for a wedding in Torquay).
If you use the university, you'll be unlikely to get a room suitable for
parents and young children; nearly all university rooms (in general) are
singles. And some universities are better than others; I'd avoid the
most south eastern one in the country if I were you!

I'm from Exeter and we always stay in the Holiday Inn Express just off the
M5 at Exeter services when we are doing a quick visit to relatives. They
have a Harry Ramsdens next door and in the service area other fast food
restaurants. You get a continental breakfast at the hotel...it's pretty
basic but has always been clean and only 30 - 50 for the room.

Just to clarify...ththat's the same one. It has a pub the other side of
the car park, and we found that quite good for eating. As Jo says,
continental breakfast is good...

Try http://www.s-h-systems.co.uk (Smooth Hound) which I used to use, in a
past life, when travelling on business. I found it pretty good for B&B and
small hotels.

Run by some great friends of mine www.larkbeare.net - heated wall mirrors in
the en-suite bathrooms, Egyptian linen sheets etc etc. Very comfortable and
child friendly.

I think only men would understand the need for this. It's surprisingly
nice to get out of the shower and finding the mirror completely free of
steam all ready for your wet-shave.

Depends where you started from. If from John-O-Groats maybe but from London
that's only about half-way time wise.
