Gold Card 1st upgrade question..
Am I right in thinking the 3 1st upgrade is valid for any train after 10am
not including trains leaving London between 16:00 and 19:00 ??

Yep that's right, plus a couple of TOC-specific restrictions. Buy the
upgrade at the ticket office before you get on the train, it's valid
for the whole journey as dated, including connections.

So if I have a Ryde Esplanade/St Johns Season I could effectively travel 1st
between Southampton and Cambridge Return for 2/3 the price of a Saver
return, + 2 x 3 upgrades.. which = 34.50 + 6 = 40.50

What's the validity on Virgin Cross Country Services? I frequently travel
between Kensington Olympia and East Croydon on Virgin. The ticket office at
KO always refuses to sell me the upgrade, telling me it's not valid on short
jouneys (for either Virgin or Southern).
Next time I go, I think I'll take the relevant page of the fares manual.
Would the Virgin "Shop" provide the snack box, drinks if I managed to ever
obtain the upgrade?
Thanks for any help.

I suggest you do, and as I always say: complain to the local station
manager if you get no joy (if they receive no complaints they'll carry
on doing it!).
I'll check this out as well next time I'm at work just to confirm!
Ta,

I think you'll find you need only 1 UKP3 upgrade, since it covers the
same journey as your ticket, single or return.

Validity on VCC is 'at the discretion of the Train Manager, but I've
not hyet been refused - indeed they seem happy to allow use of the
upgrade. And yes - they have always provided the snack box also.
