Digital Camcorder
Want a digital camcorder for my holiday in September. Not really up on the
new technology. Any suggestions for a reasonably priced camcorder? Must
have USB 1.0/2.0 connector as I do not have firewire.
Thanks

Usually the USB ports on a digital camcorder are for outputting
photo's only, it you want to move video you will need a firewire card
due to the amount of data involved in video

you /need/ firewire to extract video from your camcarder.

Actually USB 2.0 is faster than Firewire 400. I have read of camcorders that
do output video over USB 2.0 but I don't know of any off hand. More research
required! But a firewire card is a cheap option, assuming the PC has a spare
slot to add one.

theoretically. on paper, but have you actually tried to extract DV from a
camcorder using USB ?
USB2 runs *up to* 480mbps whilst firewire runs at a *minimum* of 400mbps which
is actually better in real world, off paper 'I've read about it' type applications.

"*minimum* of 400mbps" Are you sure?
My camcorder is an S100 firewire device => 100mbps
Which *IS* fast enough for real time DV capture.

1/ record 1hr of digital video
2/ extract 20mins of that video to your hard drive using USB2
/3 do the same with firewire
4/ notice that the USB extracted video has occasional jitters on it
5/ notice that the firewire extracted video doesn't
firewire cards are 11 and firewire cables are 2.50, with p&p it's
still less than 20 for a proven jitter free video transfer solution.

I do not have space in my PC for a firewire care, hence the need to the USB
support. Sorry should have posted that.

What nonsense, my Samsung has both firewire and USB2 and will output
video on either, whats more there is no "jitter" from the USB2 as
sudgested by one of your later posts.
Now I am not saying that you are incorrect as this might be true on some
Camcorders but mine does not do this and works perfectly fine on both
USB2 and Firewire.
Whats more I can use my camcorder as a webcam when it's plugged in on
the USB2 port.. which is nice :)

That appears to work using firewire too.
No special drivers loaded just XP SP2.
