Mondeo (2001) - Brake lights on with clutch pedal
Hi,
I have a Y reg Ford Mondeo (new style). I discovered today that my rear
brake lights are coming on when I press the clutch pedal. That will explain
the reason why I keep getting flashed by other cars!
I guess the brake switch is being activated when the clutch is pressed.
Could the brake switch move?
Is this something easy I can fix myself, or will it need a trip to the
garage?
Cheers,
Matt

Maybe the switch is adjusted too sensitively? Or maybe you have the wiring
for the clutch pedal switch crossed with the brake switch (I know fiestas
have a clutch switch)

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "Matthew Bailey"
saying something like:

I don't know about the Mondeo, but it's fairly common for both clutch
and brake pedals to be on a common pivot shaft. If the miserable smear
of grease supplied by the factory gets stiff or simply vanishes, it's
not unknown for the action of the clutch pedal to move the brake one
slightly, thus triggering the brake light switch.
Furtle around in the footwell and aim some penetrating oil at the shaft.

Most modern Fords have a clutch pedal switch that is physically similar to
the brake light one. Check to see if the brake lights are working from the
*brake* pedal. If not, it is likely that the switches are on the wrong
pedals.
