Sneck Lifter
I have just been down to the local bottle shop here in Townsville and I
notice they had 500ml bottles of Sneck Lifter ale brewed by Jennings
Brothers, Castle Brewery, Cockermouth, Cumbria. It did cost a fortune
($7.50 a bottle) but I bought a few and have them in the fridge cooling down
at present. This will be my first Jennings since my last trip to the old
dart when I had a Jennings with Ian Z. I have never seen it before in Oz.

Well, THAT'S BIG news, Ray. Are you sozzled now? Gowan, tell us all. Was it
good beer? Are you sitting on your backside under a coolibar tree singing
Once a jolly swag man camped by a billabong, while passers by look on and
take pictures, wondering if you've gone 'round the bend. I bet you are.

I wonder if they'll start selling Jennings here in Canada?

I'll go around to the store on the way home and have a look. We
need some beer in the house regardless.

Quite it's a real beer not lager. Lager needs to be just above
freezing point so you *can't* taste the damn stuff. Beer should be at
cellar temperature, about 55F or 12C. Fridges are below 5C far to cold
for real beer.

They didn't have any Jennings. Bought some Molson Export for a
certain friend for when he comes over, and some raspberry
tequila coolers for the missus and some Kilkenny for myself.

Our fridge is 4C, our house is 24C inside thanks to a/c and
outside it's 32C. We don't have a beer fridge at a decent
temperature. If you ever come over here, be prepared. Beer is
served "ice-cold". When it's 32C outside, there's some merit to
that.

Hope you had a great time on the dark continent. Oops, is that a
forbiddent non-PC term?

Canadian beer is nothing like your real beer. The cold kills the
taste. So that's a good thing.

Johnny-ex-Canadian-beer-drinker

PS, Canadian beer is still beer though, unlike American 'beer'.

It's unbelievable. A man goes to Africa for a holiday and the only thread he
can start is one about beer. I'm in shock.

Oh where to start. Our first Hols for 4 years: we went to SA for 4 weeks:
stayed with new relos (new son-inlaw from Howick in Kwazulu Natal). Went to
coast, mountains, bush etc. Saw lions, elephant, (you don't ride African
Elephants, well, not the wild ones: unless you are pretty foolish); rhino,
baboons, vervet monkeys, hyenas, impala, kudu, buffalo, the tail of a
leopard disappearing into the bush, duiker, loads of birds including black
eagle, vultures, kingfishers, honey buzzard.
Trip of a lifetime, made even better by staying with "real" people.

Came back to a scorching Lake District (hotter than Africa).

But "beer" in Oz isn't real beer it's a lager of some description.
Lagers have little decent flavour so they have to served cold so you
can't tell they are flavourless gnats pee. (Can you tell I don't like
lager...)

A fairly steady 22C even with it getting to the high 20's yesterday,
just a shade under 25C today. No air con, just good solid stone
construction, keeps the inside cool in summer and warm in winter (but
don't turn the heating off as it takes several days to warm back
up...)

There's nothing like stone, even over here. I once called about
a stone house for sale near here that I love the look of. Nearly
a million dollars - four times what my larger house is worth.

In summer our houses don't cool off overnight. They are so well
insulated that if you let the heat in during the day it stays
with you and you cannot sleep. There's no breeze most nights so
opening the windows doesn't help. Keeping it cool with a/c is
the only civilzed thing to do. We have air-to-air exchangers
which mean we have fresh air regardless of the sealed up doors
and windows.

Hey! Oh, guess you're right. Since discovering Bitter I have to agree. If
you get Sam Adams cold enough (we're talking ice crystals here) it's
drinkable. For lack of anything better. I do like Molson Export when I can
find it.

Discovering Jennings at the local liquor store would be like Christmas.

Re: Sneck Lifter
There seems to be some sort of mis-understanding about newsgroups.
In an effort to broaden your understanding and I wonder if I
could explain the function of < uk.local.*> news groups. All of them,
have been from the very beginning and will be to the very end safe
play areas for all sorts of rageing nutters, social malcontents,
controll freaks and malevolent beings.

You may feel that they should go elsewhere but where? The asylums are
all closed. What would YOU have off them?

Standing in their back yards at midnight howling to the full moon and
frighting the shite out of the neighbours into the bargain?

Have them running around shafting masons, suspected werewolves,
communists, socialists, conservatives and women with vaginal warts by
the dozen? OR harmlessly making utter cunts of themselves in a
uk.local group?

Lets face it what is one other utter cunt amongst the many in this
group?? I know what I prefer!! The uk.local hierarchy of newsgroups is
a valuable safety valve which helps to keep society a wee bit more
safe.

You may disagree. I would be interested to hear your opinion and no
doubt would the rest of the group.

Thanks in advance.
