Yeah, it took Edinburgh a long time to recover from the 1970 Commonwealth
Games. And then what did they go and do? They went and hosted them again...

NPR had a reporter from the Scotsman describing the events in Edinburgh
today. Seems the G8 summit was sponsered by Ford, Sun Microsystems, Diaggio
et al. When the interview was over the NPR gut asked what was that wailing
sound in the background. "Ah" said the reporter "that would be the godawful
sound of bagpipes". NPR man was surprised that the reporter would make such
a comment but it seems the reporter was in fact born five miles over the
border so perhaps he was a Cumbrian insulting your national mammal.

Al born five miles on the right side of the border.

Most Scots are sick to death of the sound of the Great Highland Bagpipe.
Everywhere you go, there they are - the failed pipe-majors, the teenage
wannabees, standing in every conceivable spot from shop doorways in Princes
Street to carparks in the depths of the tourist-infested Cairgorms, dressed
in full highland regalia, kilts a-flapping, playing 'Flower of Scotland',
'Amazing Grace' or, the worst 'Scottish' tune ever penned by an Englishman,
'Mull of Kintyre'.

Scottish bagpipes are wonderful, USED PROPERLY. There's nothing more
heart-achingly beautiful than a fine ancient pibroch played by a lone piper,
out of doors; nothing more exciting than dance music played on the lowland
smallpipes. I can even understand how the massed pipe bands of the Scottish
regiments (what's left of them) on the Castle Esplanade must thrill all
those Americans who visit the tattoo each year in search of their Scottish
roots.

But there are so many *awful* pipers, and they fill up every corner of
Edinburgh in the summer, so much so that certain offices have banned them
from busking outside their premises as they force the staff to work all day
in the height of summer with their windows closed.

Anyway, the reporter's comment was all part of what's known as the 'Scottish
cringe', where we continually do ourselves down, making fun of everything
that might make others quite proud of their heritage. It's just not cool to
be a Scot who actually admits to *liking* the sound of bagpipes.

I find, as an occasional admirer of the pipes, that they sound
best at a distance. I'm not saying that to be funny. It's
wonderful to hear a lone piper way off in the distance.

You're right. They're *meant* to be heard from a distance. (The Great
Highland Bagpipe, anyway.)
