Murray Road Post Office (was fellwalking at some point...)
Workington's main Post Office is now on Oxford Street crammed into what used
to be the chemist's, about opposite the bus station. Next to where Toggi's
used to be, Rydiards shoe-shop, Brinicombe's hat-shop, and Edgars fruiterers
(all no more).

There is another PO on Vulcans Lane, but it looks like it will be shutting
soon as no-one seems to want to run it. Station Road PO shut some time ago
(much to the consternation of everyone down that part of town).

The original PO on Murray Road - designed and built as such in 1904 - is now
a betting shop, after standing empty for several years. It was once mooted
to be a fancy restaurant, but it never happened. Just the same as RNAD
Broughton Moor was mooted to become West Cumbria's answer to Center Parcs or
Alton Towers or the Eden project....

It will never happen, either.

-------------------------------------

I visited this Post Office a few weeks ago.
I am a Glaswegian and make regular use of my mobile phone to
keep in touch with my family whilst domiciled in this fair toon.

I asked for 20 to be put on my phone account and was
surprised that the member of counter staff accepted my
Royal Bank of Scotland Mastercard in a sniffy kind of way.
Workington is the only dump of a town in all of England where this
has happened. For some reason she held the card up to the light,
looking for god knows what, laid it on the counter and attempted to
peer under it as if it were about to walk off on the backs of an army
of invisible ants.

Finally, in exasperation she said , "Are you sure this is a Bank Card"

I replied...
"Don't you worry aboot that Hen.
Are you sure this is a Post Office.!!"

You're trying to break my heart, aren't you, Russell. Edgar's fruit shop had
a box of damaged fruit standing by. I used to go in their and get a good
deal on an apple after the Baths in the mornings, then on to school for 9 am

How degrading.

The usual lack of funds and -oops - must close my windows - the lads have
started grinding down the concrete again. My (sorry) other veranda is
'supposed' to be done by Friday - then the firm go on holiday for 2 weeks.
believe it when I see it.

Could you recognize any of the thingies on the last painting I sent you,
Russ. It was a flat painting with little perspective but I put some colour
in, in my very amateur way.?

Silly girl.

I was surprised and delighted to see a huge blue and white RBS Logo and
their name covering a corner of the terminal at LaGuardia Airport in
Queens, New York. I don't know if it's a regular bank branch or an
investment/merchant bank.

Re: Murray Road Post Office (was fellwalking at some point...)
Most folk mis-understand the function of these newsgroups.
Allow me to explain the function of < uk.local.*> news groups?
All of them, have been from the very beginning and will be to the very
end safe play areas for all sorts of rageing nutters, social
malcontents, controll freaks and malevolent beings.

You may feel that they should go elsewhere and leave usenet alone.
But where? The asylums are all closed! What would you have of them?
Standing in their back yards at midnight howling to the full moon and
frightining the shit out of the neighbours into the bargain? Have them
running around shafting masons, suspected werewolves, communists,
socialists, conservatives and women with vaginal warts by the dozen?
OR harmlessly making utter cunts of themselves in a uk.local group?
Lets face it what is one other cunt amongst the many in these groups??
I know what I prefer!! The uk.local hierarchy of newsgroups is a
valuable safety valve which helps to keep society a wee bit more safe.
It was also set-up to take the pressure of the real and serious news
groups such as uk.people.disability. Sadly, people whom you would not
be seen in public with have taken over this group and distorted it to
their own ends.

Before busting your solitary neurone working out a reply please
direct all hoslities (restrict your bile etc) to uk.local. groups such
as <uk.local.essx>. Your destructive inane drivel will recieve a warm
welcome. Give it a try today.

You may disagree. I would be interested to hear your opinion and no
doubt would the rest of the UK hierarchy.

Thanks for your interest.

Re: Murray Road Post Office (was fellwalking at some point...)
I reckon I probably have one of the finest Bishops in the UK.
Always there when needed. Never flinches at what has to be done.
Does an excellent job AND enjoys doing so. All of the females who
avail themselves of the Bishops services are effusesive in their
praises. It truely is a spiritual experience for all of them. Nearly
all of them return when the need arises which in some cases is very
often. I must have one of the biggest best provided for in the UK.
The body is about nine and a half inches long with a handsome purple
mitre on top. Mind you the back-up available is phenomenal.
The general diameter? Well!! When standing to attention, and that
happens quite often, is over two inches. Testicles? About the size of
a medium grade hens egg.

Yes life is wonderful.
