Did Wallace and Gromit warn against Privatisation?
Taken from: "My Pet Theory", "Empire" Movie magazine, August 2005

"Thought Wallace and Gromit were just a couple of loveable figures to
be taken at face value, with tea and biccies? Well, sit in cushion
bound comfort no more: The Wrong Trousers was actually a warning from
Nick Park against the Major government's continued privatisation and/or
deregulation of industry and services.
"Think about it: Wallace is the clueless authoritarian; Gromit, the
faithful working class who can see what will happen. In order to raise
quick cash, Wallace rents out the spare room (real estate) to a
mysterious stranger - a penguin (symbolic of the tuxedo, the second
uniform of the corporate criminal), whom Gromit regards with fear and
suspicion, Y'see?
"As we all know; it turns out that while Feather McGraw is paying the
cheap rent, he is robbing the nation blind. Also by taking control of
the mechanical trousers (technology), the criminal bird forces Wallace
to be a pawn in his plan (operating a puppet government). Fortunately
Gromit has the nous to avert the crisis. And you thought it was just
plasticine hi-jinx."
