Occasionally... you keep putting it off when they're available all the time,
I suppose. I haven't been up much this year. It's hard to get time off when
you're self-employed. We really should make more of an effort to go up those
fells - fancy living so close and spending your time watching the sea!

Hmmm, lumbering.... Isn't that a Canuck word for something else?

Kezzi-new-pedometer. . .

Did you know that on an average morning I make 384 steps to the lavatory and
back?!! Of course you didn't. But you do now! I curse these diuretics but

I need some of that whatsumudo, waddidya call it, diuretics.

Edith-off to drink a large glass of nice tap water.

BTW Does anyone know what's happened to BBC prime. I'z there watching house
invaders and a house in the country und all that lovely British stuff that
makes me homesick, then suddenly there's some silly bu88er on with a night
show on a "Star" program thingie, trying to be funny and some deluxe fashion
show that I couldn't give a dam about. I'm really disappointed. First they
take my no 5 channel and make me blue and now BBC prime. If that's so, I'll
pack it all in and sell my TV. No skin off my nose and think what I would

I'm sure there are ways to download programmes from the internet these days,
though I don't know how it's done. But you're suffering from the same thing
we are - 'dumbing down' of TV. There's less and less quality programming
these days, yes, even on the Beeb.

Many people don't watch TV any more. My son has a huge TV set but no aerial:
he watches DVDs and videos and plays computer games on it.

We've been there but then we had cable TV put into the complex and wow, this
was going to be good stuff. Well, beside all the BORING amateur Norwegian
programs, we've ended up with a load of chitty talk programs, bad music
programs, horrendous American soaps, Dr. Phil, Opra, tons of BLOOMING sport
and East Bloggy Enders and if they don't let the 2nd World War have a rest
soon, I'll go bananas. YUKK! Vomit! commi marxism

What ever happened to entertainment :0( ??? That's what I'm paying for.

In my family's experience, during the high fell-walking season, we were
too busy making money out of the tourists to go up on the fells.

Not as much as I'd like to, I'm been out abit over the past week and
also doing abit of http://www.geocaching.com to make it interesting,
I'm currently doing it using the map - no gps at the moment (on order
from the US), out of 4 searches so far I've found 2. Going up Keswick
way this afternoon to bag some more.

I do see a few cumbrians walking about, but they tend to be at the
front in these rambler groups and think they own the fells.

Did they have a shop, Jp?

Do you remember the shop on the corner in the roundabout coming into Keswick
town, just across from (Cumbrian Properties-now moved to Station Road and
corner of Southey Street)
The shop sold various things made from Cumbrian slate-beautiful things-it's
closed down now and has become a travel agency.
My cousin Phyllis Blackwell worked with these objects painting them and
such. Orly bought a clock montert in slate for his Mam from the same factory
that delivered all those lovely bric-a-bracs.
My cousin Phyllis' daughter, Lesley, works with horse and disabled people up
the lane when you have crossed the bridge and passed the station-up there
somewhere.

Now, are you homesick?
Edith.

Wow what fun! I hadn't heard about geocaching, but now I want to try it. How
are you managing to find things without the gps? Is the map accurate enough?

You don't need even a map if you take me along, Andy. I'm good at
mapping..........erm, what's gps? general post office? I'll help you find
it. It's on the corner of Murrey Road and Pow Street.Nice old sand stone
building. You can't miss it. All you do when you come out of the covered bus
station is turn left...............have you got that?

Hi Edith. Mappington now is it? You sure get through a few names and I've
not been here long.

Yes, got all those directions thanks. If it's anything like the post-office
in Cumbria I came across near the end of one of my walks, with nice cold
bottles of beer in the fridge, then that'll be fine!

Oh yes you can.....

That building hasn't been a Post Office for - Oohhhhh, let's see now: Twenty
years, at least (even though it says it is a Post Office on a plaque on the
wall). Yet another example of Workington's forward-thinking. They moved it
into the Co-op, then (several years later) they demolished the Co-op...

Then they (Council?, GPO?) discounted the possibility of moving the Post
Office back into the premises for which it was designed, as - after several
years of on-off work and empty promises - it was flogged off, presumably to
the highest bidder.

I doubt you'll find cold beer in there, Andy. Infact, the post office may
have gone by now along with much of Workington's nostalgias.

We went to a colleague of my wife's the other night where they
had built a home theatre into their basement. They watch concert
DVD's and movies with superb picture and sound for their daily
entertainment.

I hope they read the newspaper or something to compensate.

Re: fellwalking
I've mainly chosen cache sites that are 1/2 star difficulty rating and
looking at the map have couple features to get bearings from and an
idea of distance - with a map you can get with in 10-20 metres of the
cache, if read it correctly.

This page maps out my current finds (green markers) and failers (red
markers)
http://www25.brinkster.com/lakeuk/geo/finds.htm

The 'Jets Valley' and 'Steel End' caches at Thirlmere Reservoir are a
good couple to start with using a map and the clue available at
www.geocaching.com. I also tried to get the nearby 'Harrop Tarn' cache
but I made a few mistakes in trying to find it, first I put a circle on
the map where I thought the cache was, in the process hiding a track
which resulting me searching 300 metres away from the site. When I got
to the correct area the clue said in a tree stump just of the path,
problem there are many stumps in the area due to the recent storms and
being in a forrest it's harder to get land marks on the map that you
can see.

The Jets Valley cache hiding place is genius and unless you go for it
in the evening you're going to need some skill to get it without being
spotted by tourists as you're in the open.

The 'Gummers' cache south end of Windermere Lake I was lucky in
finding, on the tops there are lots of ferns, I spend 20 minutes
searching the ferns then gave up and started walking back - then
decided to have another go and try and get some extra bearings to get
me closer. Luckily it got me closer and I saw a dark gap in some ferns
which turned out to be an old tree stump where the cache was hidden.
