Another "Why did that happen?" question
While I was on Ashburys station today, an odd thing happened.

A train from Picc to New Mills (which doesn't stop at Ashburys)
approached as usual, and the signal at the end of the platform showed
green with feather as expected. However, the driver pulled up at the
signal and got out to speak to the signaller. I don't actually remember
him using the SPT, but did stand at the side of the train talking on
a mobile phone. The signal then changed to red.

At this point I noticed that the 2 signals on the other line that I
could see were also red. AFAICR, I have not seen those signals showing
anything other than the "normal" sequence of aspects (Y->R, YY->Y, etc).
That sinking feeling that all was about to go pear shaped followed.
However, the guard and driver returned to their cabs (the guard had
moved to the front of the train to talk to the driver), the signal
became green with feather and the train left. The total time that
the train was at a stand was about 5 minutes. Trains ran as normal
(but slightly delayed) at least until my Sheffield train turned up.

Any guesses as to the reason??

Cheers

Something iffy about the previous signal? Problem with track or points?
Could be one of many possibilities.

The "something iffy about the previous signal" thing got me thinking about
Clapham Junction. The most unfortunate thing there - though the driver of
the first train should not be criticised - was that *with the benefit of
hindsight* it proved not to be a good idea to stop at the signal immediately
beyond one that might be showing a false clear. Have instructions to drivers
changed in the light of this?

I believe they have, yes.
