I thought you left Edinburgh for the same reasons as I won't go there any
more!! It's full of those beastly Scottish types..... ;)
I'll put my sunset pics up tomorrow. They were terrific tonight!

Y'know, right up until tonight I thought you were quite a nice chap....
<sigh....> Now I find you're just the same as all those other bl00dy English
people... ;-)

Yeah, that was quite something. It's still nice: loads of subtle colour left
in the sky even now.

PS - Why did I leave Edinburgh? Was it because I couldn't afford the high
council tax any more? (Yup. That's one reason.) The traffic jams and parking
problems? (Yup, that too.) Could it be something to do with falling for a
Cumbrian and moving south to be with him? (Yup. That's one *big* reason.)
Or.... because Edinburgh seems to be attracting more and more bl00dy English
people every day, to the point that it's hard to hear a local accent in town
any more.....?

gosh. My log says you posted about the sunset at 18:26, which means that
you took them at half past eleven home time. It's lovely and familiar. I
wish I'd known. I've been out on Long Island, which is barely 5 hours
behind you and several degrees futher south, and I've been enjoying that
same late afternoon and evening sun, but only for another hour and a
half of real time after it set on you, because of how far south I am.
Wish I'd taken pics. The Sun traces a much more precipitate path in the
day than it does in England and certainly Scotland.
It is a very small world, and getting smaller, and I think we should be
very grateful as more and more folks realise that.

There must be New Yorkers who can't get away from bloody Brits
everywhere in Manhattan!! I go in to the city when I'm feeling homesick!
I went to WalMart recently and encountered a lady who sounded as if she
was from Essex, complete with a trio of obnoxious, screaming brats.

I've been looking out for them each evening recently, but for some reason
haven't been able to find them. Odd bits of cloud in the wrong places, I
suppose. Irritating, to say the least, as I've got a loan of a small
telescope at the moment, and every time I want to look at something, it's

I've been having trouble finding them as well. I've only seen Venus,
sky to light to see Mercury and Saturn before they all set. Position
is much further west and lower than where I normally expect to find
Venus.
I use an old DOS sky mapping programme (Sky Globe from 1993) but I
guess there are web or free doze programmes about as well.

Always the way, like the Aurora. How about Jupiter high to the west
after sunset or Mars, that is supposed to be a good target at the
moment as we are heading towards each other at 23,000mph, closest
approach October? Rises in the East about 0200 though...

I know that there are cows by the side of the new I-86 that was Route 17
from Binghamton to NYC. There are more wild deer than cows but
unfortunately too many of them were splatted on the highway. I've seen
sheep further upstate. My son saw a gorgeous cock pheasant next to the
Soccer Park, out on the Nassau/Suffolk border. Otherwise, we just have
squirrels and raccoons.

I know it's summer because I sat out on my VERANDA all yesterday and an old
crow sat at the very top of the Hanging Beach tree peering down on me and
squarking it's guts out in disgust at the fact that it had lost it's
watering hole. After my second bacardi, there were 3 old crows making a
elluva noise so I went in and closed the door behind me-in disgust.

They're just in the middle of cutting all these meadows and going round with
the baling machine. Up until last week the dogs and I had to more or less
swim through the long grasses - just as well I don't suffer from hay fever!
Some of it was almost up to my oxters, and the poor dogs couldn't see where
they were going half the time. They sort of bound through the grass, leaping
from point to point, until they get tired, and then they just wade through
it with their heads poked up as high as they can. I actually got down to
dogs' eye level and took some photos, just to get an idea what it must be
like for them. Every day I had to clean their faces after their trip through
the meadow - they were covered in grass seeds, clinging to their coats.

Believe me.Yes. I went out and sat there and there it was again. Squawking

Let me get this straight. There was one old crow on the tree, and then
you had two bacardis and suddenly there were 3 old crows squawking. I
don't know what our resident male wits are going to make of that.

I usually don't bother to check the schedules for satellites. I
just sit out and watch the sky at dusk and they are plain enough
to see for about the first hour of darkness. But if the shuttle
is up or the space station is going by, then that's the best
site to find out when and where.
