Grange-Over-Sands - I'm back!
Got back last night and had a fantastic time! Really didn't want to come
home and the week seemed to last for ever!

Very good weather, just a little rain one morning and evening and the tan is
coming along nicely.

The evenings were really relaxed, either eating fish and chips on the
seafront or eating our in different pubs / restaurants each evening. Being
on my own was cool, I chatted to so many people, disturbing other diners to
chat to them too! Well, I think they took pity on me dining alone ;-)

It really is such a friendly place. Had some great walks, just going off for
the day without worrying about time and how long it took me to get anywhere.

The first day I did a nice walk through Eggerslack woods, up to the hospice
on Grange Fell and back down, similar to this route...

http://www.leaney.org/lake_district_walk_map.php?walk_id=485&thumb=Y

Lots of memories of childhood holidays up on the fell, flying kites,
climbing big boulders, running about on the limestone pavement.

The 2nd day it started off raining, so I got the train across the viaduct
over Morecambe Bay to Lancaster and had lunch there. It brightened up a lot
in the afternoon and I drove over to Cartmel, did some wandering around,
taking photos of the Priory and had an excellent meal in the Cavendish Arms,
top food and service!

The 3rd day I drove to Haverthwaite, to get the Steam train to Lakeside,
from there a return trip up Lake Windermere to Ambleside, with lunch in
Ambleside - where every other shop sells walking or climbing gear!

The 4th day I got the train over the viaduct again, to Arnside, the next
village across the bay. Had a fantastic walk up to the top of Arnside Knott
and could have taken in the views for ages. On the way up to the top, I was
wandering over to a gate to see what was on the other side. When I got
closer, in the shade of the trees, I saw what looked like some massive
Highland Cattle with equally big horns! I quietly went back the way I came,
didn't want to disturb their sleep, lol.

When I got the train back to Grange, I had a walk around Brown Robin nature
reserve, previously private land and saw quite a few deer in the woods,
after sitting still for a while.

The 5th day I had my longest walk, from Grange to Humphrey Head and back,
about ten miles in all. I've never been to Humphrey Head, and it was a good
walk, along a variety of paths, some coastal, some along tracks and roads.
Paused for a moment at the top of a steep ladder stile, as a lot of cows had
gathered at the bottom of the stile waiting to see what I would do! They
were just curious, 3 of them followed me across the field for a while, but
soon lost interest.

On the way back thru Allithwaite, dying for a cold pint, not one, but both
pubs I passed were closed! Luckily, the post-office at Kents Bank had cold
bottles of Stella in fridge *and* the owner had a bottle opener behind the
counter, heaven! I crossed the level crossing and sat on the beach drinking
the beer, before walking the remaining 2 miles back to Grange.

Grange now has a nice new pool, still not the same as the outdoor one years
ago, right on the edge of the bay. But the new one has good views over
Morecambe Bay, actually from the pool while you're swimming, which is nice.

I took the films in for processing today, all 10 of them, as soon as I sort
through them I'll put them online and post a link.

Ally: sorry, never had time to carry on up to Ravenglass to see you play the
sax, another time! Just seen your post about the Charter Fair, it'd have
been funny if I'd approached the other sax player! Glad you had a good time.

Edith: sorry, forgot the tiles from Lancaster!

Well, I'm glad to see you anyway, Andy. I'm glad you enjoyed your holiday so
much. It sounds like just what you needed. You're forgiven for not getting
to Ravenglass!

Morning Andy,
Nice to hear you had a good time. Save your pennies and do it again soon.
As for the tiles-fibber- you can rest assured that they are already down and
still not paid for :)

Edith in sunny weather.

Haven't you got any local toilets to hang out in? You might have more luck
there.

pst! He probably doesn't even have one. Lost it on a barbed wire fence when
he was a kid- and he stayed like that.

Evening Andy

Fantastic weather here now. We are awaiting a heatwave. It will probably
last 2 weeks at the most then summer will be over.
The tiles are very nice. Except for one. It rises up like a bubble when the
sun hits it. Weird ma'an

Snigger! Probably got a falsetto voice as well then.

Speaking of barbed wire fences, just been for a nice local walk ("nice" as
in the noise from the M25 not being as loud as it could be if I was sat
right next to it!) and had to scramble through brambles to rescue a poor
lamb with it's head caught in a fence. The wire fence was made up of
squares, just the wrong size to trap a lamb's head - it was thrashing about
trying to free itself and was in danger of cutting itself on a strand of
barbed wire. So quietly went up to it, lifted some of the wire to enlarge
the gap, at which point it went mad trying to escape - running into the
fence even more - so I gave its head a push backwards and it got the idea
and escaped!

Never seen such a silly fence, didn't seem to be a reason why a normal
barbed wire fence couldn't have been used.

Good for you. That's your good deed for the day. I imagine sheep get stuck
on barbed wire fences too, by their wool. I saw one sheep caught in branches
once and unable to get loose.Poor thing, her legs were giving in under her.
She must have been there for hours. There was a strong beck to cross so I
knocked on a cottage door and a young man went across in his wellies and
freed her.

What other good deeds have been done today folks?

Edith.

You can have ours. 35C and humid. Power blackouts as the air
conditioners have been breeding faster than the power
generators.

It's called "pig netting" - I think, and the reason they used it
is that, as you witnessed, lambs can't get through it!
(Lambs can roll under barbed-wire fences.)

Ah, thanks for that. Yes, pretty effective at stopping lambs getting
through!

Could do with making the squares a wee bit bigger though, so when they put
their head through, they can get out again!

Ah but when this is tiddly lambs they'd be able to get through a
larger hole.

There is lots of this fencing about with lambs and you don't see it
drapped with corpses. Given time a lamb will get free and will
probably remember not to do it again, though knowing sheep I wouldn't
bet on it...

It is nice, I used to live there just over the border from Surrey. What was
especially nice was the rates in Hampshire used to be half of what they paid
in Camberley five miles away.

That's strange really. You'd think everyone would be equally taxed. Did
everyone have their own well in the back garden?

There was this village we used to know, south of Edinburgh a bit, that had
the boundary line between Midlothian and Peeblesshire running through the
middle of it. Half the village paid their rates to Midlothian County
Council, and the other half to Peeblesshire, which was a lot cheaper. There
was a lot of ill-feeling about this, as you can imagine. Rumour has it there
was one house that lay bang dead centre on the boundary, with half in
Midlothian and half in Peeblesshire, but it sounds like a myth to me.

I don't know how it stands now, but I bet they all ended up together on the
dearer side of the border. Peeblesshire is now part of Borders Region and
Midlothian part of Lothian Region.

Hi Johnny,

Barry may have been before my time, don't recall the name!

I'm fairly new here, since about the middle of June.

I know. I haven't missed your posts. Barry is/was uklc's leading
loser in the girlfriend department. Although I must say he's not
the only male here that can't sustain a meaningful relationship.

Barry used to come on here and wear his heart on his sleeve
about his failures. So we gave him some fantastic advice which
could have turned around his fortunes. But he wouldn't listen. I
don't know where he's disappeared to.

I think it's highly unlikely you could possibly be as hopeless
as Barry just based upon random statistics. There plenty of
nosey people people here who'd love to hear every detail of your
love life and give you free advice.

Be warned.

Hi again Johnny,

I've just been having fun here with Ally and Edith, and have a soft spot for
Cumbria.

Cheers for the warning, not really into sharing every bit of my life on
usenet, shame Barry didn't listen though and no, I'm sure I'm nowhere near
as hopeless as him!

I'll be hanging around, I'm slowly getting my photos of my Grange trip
online, so will post a link when I can bothered to sit in front of the
computer long enough to finish the changes to my website!

Cheers,

I know what that's like. I have about 500 photos from my April

There seems to be some sort of mis-understanding about newsgroups.
In an effort to broaden your understanding and I wonder if I
could explain the function of < uk.local.*> news groups. All of them,
have been from the very beginning and will be to the very end safe
play areas for all sorts of rageing nutters, social malcontents,
controll freaks and malevolent beings.

You may feel that they should go elsewhere but where? The asylums are
all closed. What would YOU have off them?

Standing in their back yards at midnight howling to the full moon and
frighting the shite out of the neighbours into the bargain?

Have them running around shafting masons, suspected werewolves,
communists, socialists, conservatives and women with vaginal warts by
the dozen? OR harmlessly making utter cunts of themselves in a
uk.local group?

Lets face it what is one other utter cunt amongst the many in this
group?? I know what I prefer!! The uk.local hierarchy of newsgroups is
a valuable safety valve which helps to keep society a wee bit more
safe.

You may disagree. I would be interested to hear your opinion and no
doubt would the rest of the group.

Thanks in advance.

Got a few photos online so far, none of Cumbria, though. These are of the
place I stopped to have my lunch on the way there, as well as the the return

Acton Trussell in Staffordshire.

Oh, there are a couple in Cumbria. 2 photos of me I put online for Yvonne to
look at! We had a great date, by the way, and we're meeting up again soon.

Wonderful, beautiful old England, Andy and so nice to hear your date was a
success. I hope all you lonely lads out there find a nice friend and have a
wonderful summer together. Girls too. ;)
