Google Maps
Hasn't reached cumbria yet, but google this week started adding many
satellite images of places in europe.

Found this on a map between Reading and Slough

Wow. I saw the American ones some time ago - wondered when they'd get over
here.

They must be in the middle of setting it up. I had a look for Edinburgh, but
found it only available on quite a small scale. If you pan westwards a bit,
though, you can zoom right in on the Forth Bridges. Maybe they're
concentrating on the major trunk routes first, and then filling in the towns
and cities later on?

I shall now be up all night, looking down upon my favourite places....
thanks Dave...

It has reached Cumbria, just not to a very large scale. It doesn't seem to
know many place names, but I typed in 'Carlisle', and the city came up at
lowish resolution: I panned around a bit and I've just found my way to
Cockermouth, Maryport and Crosby. I can just make out the narrow road down
through Crosscannonby to the Solway coast. Allonby Bay is lovely and clear.
I do hope they up the resolution a bit, soon, though! Migh tbe able to make
out my car parked round the back of my house.

What fun!

Re: Google Maps
Edith - there are satellite pix of Norway too. Seems to be a high res
section around Oslo, and a bit lower resolution down where you are, but
still....

The search function isn't very good though. You have to zoom right out until
you can see the whole of Europe - or the world, if you like - and then zoom
in on the bit you want.

You can tell I like this thing!

Has everyone else gone to bed?

My ISP wouldn't let me connect! I haven't had dinner yet. I believe that
Johnny Canuck is snowed under with work, on what has been over the
whole area, a pleasantly warm bright, sunny and gorgeous day.

I must say that it does have very high quality maps and it's very easy
to use. We've got it here in the US too. I must have a look to see if my
area has satellite pics!

You used to be able to get a preview of the 0.25m resolution aerial
Getmapping images but they seem to have removed that recently. B-(

I actually found your street a wee while ago... and never got around to
telling you! Sorry... Looks like a nice district you live in. Seemed to be
very high resolution around there. Much better than they've got here so far.

But the _whole world_ is there. Some parts in more detail than others. If
you zoom about a bit you can see little brown rectangles where the higher
resolution areas can be found, and they're all over the planet, in often
unexpected places. Big cities are high res, yes, but I found some strange
sort of army depot or something somewhere in North Africa, in extremely high
resolution. Felt like a spy, gazing down on this place, its buildings and
vehicles. I found Edith's area of Norway, and with the help of a map from
Multimap more-or-less pinpointed her street. She certainly has a great view
of the bay. I flew across Europe, coming down low over odd, random spots in
Belgium, Italy and Greece and headed for the Middle East which was about the
point I realised that having an atlas open on the desk might have been a big
help. Exactly which big Arab city was I hovering over? Dunno. But it looked
very hot and dry. I gasped in amazement at the appearance of the Sahara
Desert from above. I flew across the Himalyas and came down low over the
Ganges, where unfortunately the resolution isn't that good, but good enough
to know which river is which. I had a quick look at Japan and nipped down to
Australia. This thing is amazing! It's what computers/the internet were made
for! Soon the whole planet will be available in high resolution for everyone
the world over to examine in detail. There cannot be any secrets after that.

Er... sorry. Got a bit carried away there. Did I mention I'm a bit of a
cartographical obsessive? ( A map-freak.)

Right. Off to South America now....

You and me - and Johnny too.

Oh, my goodness! Yes! That's my house. It's actually to the right of the
pointer, which is stuck in next door's drive! We have a large tree out
front, and you can see the shadow. You can pick out the enormous
satellite dish on my ex-Landlord's roof!! You can see the Golf club
where my son will be caddying. You can tell it's America, because you
can see the baseball pitch. If you pan out you can see all the runways
of Kennedy Airport and go a bit further to the left and there's NYC!

You can find the Statue of Liberty in the Bay - it's the small island,
down and to the left, nearly on the shore of New Jersey. You can see the
green of the statue, surrounded by grey stone.

Oh, gosh, this is fun!!

Is that the one I used to use? Millennium Map or something it was called
originally, but changed its name. You got really high res previews. I spent
ages on a dial-up modem moving around our area here, copying aerial photos
and sticking them together. I have a lovely photo-map of all the fields and
lanes from here to Allonby and nearly to Maryport in the other direction. I
always intended going back when I got broadband, but I guess they cottoned
on to what people were doing. If I did it, no doubt others did, and they
didn't make any money out of us that way. Oh well.

Re: Google Maps
I have an overwhelming need to share this with you all. Its about what
I hate most about newsgroups . . . . control freaks like netnannies
and net cops and here is why.

They are like when a little bit of shite gets stuck just inside yer
rectum not far enough down that you can squeeze it either in or out.
It just lies there, you feel it but can do nought about it. It just
sits there and irritates the hell out of you. The only effect is the
production of irritation nothing else. That is really what they are
like. They achieve nothing else. The trolls are still there!!

Shite in yer rectum will eventually be resolved. Netnannies and
netcops are always there. The name and individual may change but there
is always some shit baiting and upsetting harmless trolls. The effect
is to give the troll a mission in life. Look at the uk.local hierarchy
at the moment, yorkshire, birmingham and essx in particular. Ruined
for the average poster. The majority of groups are empty, except for
troll droppings, spam and the odd genuine post!!!

What amazes me is that some of the netnannies not only boast about
reporting contributors to their ISP but attempt to get other people
to do the same. This gives the troll an extra boast of "adrenaline".
Its all beyond me!

Maybe I am too sensitive a guy.

Thanks for your interest.

Terramap pulls together several sources into one web site. One of the
sources is indeed the Millenium Map from Getmapping that site also
still exists in it's own right (haven't checked...). The Millenium
map is based on aerial photographs from a few thousand feet rather
than satellite based imageary.

I've got the bits from doing that for here, however the previews from
Gettmapping were horribly JPEG compressed so covered in artifacts. The
preview from Terramap was pretty much what you'd have to pay for but
with several plain white terramap URLs superimposed. POP to remove
with Paintshop Pro...

I must drop into the mapping shop in Penrith sometime and see what
overlays options they can now do on OS maps. I'd like a standard sheet
sized 1:25000 scale centred on here.

'Tis a pretty slick and fast interface that doesn't require an
propritary browser or plugin.

Pity the image for here is such low res, compared to that excellent
airbase resolution one. The wider view is good a showing the vallies
and fells and the urban splodges of Penrith and Carlisle though.

If you zoom out to notch 7 on the Golden Gate you can see the Bay Area
Bridge, three for the price of one!

I keep getting somewhere near Bracknell. Sure that's not right

once upon a time that would have been correct but the co-ordinates I
intended to post were several thousand miles west of Bracknell. If you zoom
out of the Bracknell map you might find Broadmoor, the mother of all funny
farms.

Yeah, if you pan about from a linked location the URL doesn't change
from where you started. Well 'tis a beta.

Re: Google Maps
When you find the location you wish to post the link too, make sure
that you clink the "Link to this page" link in the top right side of
the page. This changes the URL to the actual grid references you are
viewing.

Took me a few goes to get it right :-)
