How to remove number plate screw covers?

I want to temporarily take off the number plates on my car, and am
unsure how to first remove the small black plastic covers that protect
the screws or bolts. Do I take a pair of pliers to each of them and
twist or pull? Presumably ...

Went to a few garages this afternoon to find out who does tracking. When I
asked about warranty on the work done, all but one of them said there was no
warranty as the tracking could be knocked out by hitting a bump, etc.

After doing the clutch on the 'Scort, I'm find the gearbox a tad more of a
challenge to get back in place.
The car's on axle stands at the mo, with the engine supported by a jack.

Is this a difficult job? It looks to me as though it'll drop out
if the plastic shroud around the gear lever is removed, and a few
screws undone. Are I misguided? Anyone done this/got ideas?
