Self-destructing starter motor

Hi,
The starter motor on my K-plate Renault Savanna lunched itself today.
Wouldn't turn the engine (1.9 diesel), just lots of nasty graunching noises.
Pulled it out, and the housing at the pinion end which supports the end ...

I have a manky & dusty bay I want to clean out. On a previous petrol engined
car I ended up knackering the coil
when I got that steam cleaned a few years ago.
Please advise whether its 'sensible' to get it cleaned and should ...

equivilent tyre sizes - what about rim width?

I've been reading for ages on equivelent tyre sizes, but no-one ever
seems to mention the width of the rim in all this. Surely any given
tyre diameter will change, the narrower the rim it is squeezed on to...
and there must ...

Just returned from viewing the Volvo. A nice surprise I got was that the
owner was a Volvo dealer mechanic, evident from the greasy blue shirt the

The thin black plastic trim along the bottom of a rear passenger door window
of my mk 4 Astra has snapped off an inch and a half or so at the door pillar
end, leaving a hole exposed in the panel where the trim was attached ...

Failed MOT Emission test

My 98 Rover 400 diesel has failed the MOT emission test. Reading of 9,
pass is no more than 3.
Any suggestions on how to get the emissions down ?

Sludge in cooling system

Metro 1.4 Auto (M reg)... the header tank had a load of brownish grey
sludge in it, and I have taken it off and cleaned it out.
What causes it?
Assuming that this muck is also elsewhere in the cooling system is
