VPI/VCI setting for O2 ADSL broadband?

I have a Thomson Speedtouch Home router which has a VPI/VCI setting of 8/35.
Is it correct that thus must be reset to 0/38 for ISP providers in the UKofGB&NI,
in this case, specifically for 02 broadband?
And could anybody explain what these settings do and why some providers use
different values?

I had a BT engineer in yesterday to install an ISDN line. He had to
go the the locked cabinet where our lines come in from the exchange.
There was a pair of wires with a BT label attached to them with
various details written on one side, and 'CWSS Caution 120V', I think

I've recently moved house and signed up for telephone service via the
web. The nice chaps and chapesses at Openreach did a quick and
professional job of getting my phoneline reactivated within a few days,
and I was soon able to sign up for broadband with my old broadband
provider again. So far, so great.
