Short projects for amateur astronomers
A selection of ideas for short projects suitable for amateur
astronomers have been collected together. Included here are projects

New to group - photography question
Sat, 24 Nov 2007 00:04:29 -0000
Good evening.
My wife has asked me what I would like for Xmas, (very kind of her).
I've been toying with the idea for some years now to go back to my old 'late
teens / early twenties' hobby of 'pointing a telescope at the sky'.
I hope to get a Skywatcher telescope at whatever budget the other half can

High Profile Variable Stars (2)
R CRB - a sooty star?
R Coronae Borealis (R CrB) is a popular target with both visual and
CCD based telescope users - not least because it is so easy to find.
R CrB is subject to sudden, irregular and deep declines in brightness.
It may spend anything between a few months and ...

Sonics and Entropy

We are familiar with the behaviour of bridges in winds and to
synchronised traffic. Likewise the destruction of buildings that can
take place with and earthquake's waves.
Here is a picture of the resonance of a molecule:

Nova Monitoring

Nova Monitoring
It is perfectly possible to make a significant contribution to the
hobby with just a few, well targeted, observations each week. For
example in the last couple of years there were some outstandingly
interesting novae well within the range of amateur astronomers. When
you look at the results note ...

Lynds' Catalogue of Dark Nebulae (LDN 497)

Lynds' Catalogue of Dark Nebulae (LDN 497)
LDN 497 in Scutum
Lynds' Catalogue of Dark Nebulae (LDN 497) shows up well in these two
images. Of almost equal interest are the stars that are very bright in
the infra-red but almost invisible in V (green) band. Presumably these
stars must be very cool red giants.

A Possible New Common Proper Motion Pair?

A Possible New Common Proper Motion Pair?
TYC 2523-1622-1 and TYC 2523-1878-1 in Ursa Major
Careful measurement over many years reveals that all stars are moving
independently through space and this results in slow changes in their
position relative to the earth.
Proper Motion is a vector, that is it has bo ...
