Wrong wiring for lighting circuit
Wed, 17 Sep 2008 05:10:20 -0700 (PDT)
I was just watching property ladder, and the guy said that after they
had just installed the lighting circuit, they had found out it was the
wrong sort of cable.
Can you think of what he meant? They didn't actually say any more on
the subject - which is really annoying for a viewer, if we are not to
make the s ...

Very heavy filing cabinet

VERY heavy. 233kg
http://www.thesafeshop.co.uk/products/2-2130-2h-2-drawer.html#specification
It's fireproof, but god only knows what they put in it to get it to
that weight. Thank god I don't need a four-drawer one.
Two issues arise:
1) Can my floor stand it? It will be in the corner of a first floor
room w ...

C20 concrete mix
Wed, 17 Sep 2008 11:34:44 +0100
After considering the much appreciated advice given here, I've now decided
to bite the bullet and pour a concrete base for my shed.
AIUI C20 is a suitable mix.
If I use all-in ballast, would I need to mix 1:5 or 1:6?
As far as quantities go, it's about 0.75m3. So, if using say 1:5, I'd need:
50 x 25Kg all- ...

OT: Energy bills
Wed, 17 Sep 2008 11:11:04 +0100
Earlier this year I changed the way I pay my gas and elec bills to monthly
direct debit (to take advantage of the annual discount).
Prior to this, I would just pay the bills as they came in every quarter.
Since changing to DD (Feb I think), I do not get a quarterly bill. I would
have thought I would still get ...

An adhesive problem
Wed, 17 Sep 2008 09:25:33 +0100
Last year I replaced the headlining on my old car. It's a foam backed
nylon material which is glued to a fibre former. The instructions were to
use spray on contact adhesive which I got from the same trim suppliers.
And it's failed in several places - mostly where it's most under the
highest tension, like the d ...

Changing from economy 7
Wed, 17 Sep 2008 09:12:47 +0100
I finally go around to arranging to change from Economy 7 to a
standard tariff prior to changing suppliers. Now I don't leave
computers on 24/7 nor run the dishwasher or washing machine at night
it wasn't economic.
I'm a bit surprised the electricity company are going to change the
meter instead of just read th ...

Toolstation Reading
Wed, 17 Sep 2008 00:21:14 GMT
Does anyone else in RG-land know about/use this? I'm always gobsmacked (a)
that it's always empty when I go in (I've never met another customer in
there even when round the corner at Screwfix they're queuing round the
block), (b) that they haven't spent tuppence on promoting the place (except
for a vinyl banner on ...

MAF sensor
Tue, 16 Sep 2008 23:45:19 +0100
I need a manifold air pressure sensor for a project. Preferably a bulkhead
mount type. One bar fine. Analogue output.
Thought I'd found the ideal one off an Escort - but it has a digital
output.

Ultrasonic measures mit laser dot
Tue, 16 Sep 2008 22:28:41 GMT
Anyone have any specific knowledge/experience of ultrasonic measures?
I'm looking for a simple accurate way of measuring things like door frames,
alcoves, cupboard interiors etc rather than complete rooms.
Most seem to have a minimum range of 60cm which is fine, maximum range
whatever. Like one with a laser ...

Screwfix becomes Fix
Tue, 16 Sep 2008 21:51:52 +0100
Went to local Screwfix counter today to buy some Turbo Ultra screws. Did
the usual, just about to pay and chap said they didn't have any. Offered
to get them order in - for Thursday.
There was a notice about supply problems with the Far East. I think Mr
Medway (or someone) mentioned pollution reduction measur ...
