I'm putting together an article for my website which lists all the
hostels in the closure announcement (one year ago, come the end of the
month) and what's happened to them.
Through much digging and Googling, I've found out something about most

I was surprised but very pleased to see in the 'stop press' leaflet
with the handbook that some of the closed YH's are re-appearing as
bunkhouses, including Steps Bridge, Blackboys, Earby & Elmscott.
A news release on the website says they were auctioned off and the new

Coming upon a YH featuring in an old children's book ('At close grips'
by Douglas Duff, where the hero keeps himself inconspicuous by posing
as a cycle tourist travelling between YH's) led me to wonder whehe else
they appear in fiction. The only other example which comes to mind is a
YH being mentioned in an Agt ...

Anyone got anything to say on the new guide book - sorry I mean
'accomodation guide'?
I must admit I like the fact there is a photo of 'every' hostel this
time around, but I'd have liked the old style 'how to get to' maps for
each hostel to return. Lets hope all the phone numbers are right this
time.

Food in Youth Hostels

Not been to Youth Hostels for over 20 years but looking at them for Family
weekends in the Lakes. Can't seem to find anything on th YHA website re
food other than it mentions that some hostels do meals.
Last time I went, I seem to recall cooking my own meal once and also buying

How do I find out which hostels are open?!

I think this question was answered in a different thread a few days
back but I am on the verge of shouting at my computer!
I want to find out which hostels are open next weekend - ie the New
Year weekend. Using the YHA(E&W) website, do I need to click on each
hostel's page and check their opening dates? I do ...

Review of the new Edinburgh Central SYHA

Sunday morning. I must say that I loved the old Edinburgh hostels (now

that "Gradbach Mill is predominantly a group visit only hostel ". Would
