They're on a Reed Mace leaf and there are lots and lots of these
clusters all over the pond...
Is there another way apart from going back regularly to see if we can
find the pupae ?

Cherry trees

What size of bird has the wild cherry tree fruit evolved for?
Considering the size of stone which I presume is designed to pass through
the bird, I suppose a blackbird would pass it by, or just have a peck at it?
Perhaps a Mistle Thrush and larger, such as the crow family?

wood ant behaviour

On a couple of occasions recently, I have noticed wood ants (Formica rufa)
on the nest congregating in a tight mass, moving but keeping within the
mass. The group had a shiny black appearance.
Others, the minority, were working, moving nest materials etc.
Has anyone an explanation, please?

Puffins in serious decline due to lack of food (sand eels etc) approx
40/50% lost due to starvation. Predation by other seabirds is
significant and *normal* nature looks after itself. Yet we have been
misled in blaming rats. Gulls alone predated over 3000 puffin chicks
