Hole in Oak Tree

I noticed a hole about 2- 2.5 inches diameter, in a mature
oaktree. The bark was gone, showing some old damage,
and the hole seemed bored upwards, under the remaining
bark. the wood with no bark could be rotting I suppose, from
the inside.
There is a fallout trail of reddened, powdered wood below it.

Midge parasites

An angling friend who takes great pics of insects favoured by trout has
taken one of a midge which appears to be infested with some sort of
parasite. Anyone able to provide any information about these please?
The midge in these pics is about 11mm overall.

Dee Estuary Wales/England biting insects

I heard talk today of a survey of a (fly?) or other biting insect
which is supposed to be rare, which occurs, sometimes in
discomforting numbers, in the estuary of the Dee?
Anyone heard of what the insect is, and point to some text
for a description?

Flowers of Iberian Peninsula

Can anybody recommend a good, modern field guide to the flowers of the
Iberian peninsula?
I've just returned from holiday in the Sierra Aracena, NW of Seville -
the wild flowers where spectacular but most aren't in NW Europe or
Alpine guides I already have.
I do have a copy of "Flowers of the Mediterranean", ...

Stick insects for free

Hi everybody!
My stick insects population is overgrown and I need to give away some in
order to keep the colony healthy.
Before I start to cull some of them is there anybody who would like to
have some as pets? They are lovely creepy crawly creatures and it is
very easy to care after them.

Saturday midday I was walking along the "Wandle Way" in Merton (SW London)
when there was a light shower with weak sunshine. Almost at once every gap
in tree cover along the river bank was filled by clouds of tiny, pale,
flying things.
They did not seem to be hostile, but one had to be very careful not to
swall ...
