Burrowing mice.
Mon, 15 Jun 2009 17:35:00 +0100
OK, so what sort of mice burrow around like a mole undermining plants, paths
etc and eat redcurrants, pea seeds, bean seeds, chew spuds..... and won't
touch normal (peanut flavoured) rodent bait?
A cross between a mole and a mouse! :-(
Yet another pest on the allotment to deal with!! Perhaps I shouldn't hav ...

Red kites
Sun, 24 May 2009 10:33:21 +0000 (GMT)
Friday early afternoon a red kite flew over Great Horwood, half way between
Bletchley and Buckingham. It was definitely on the lookout for food but was
wise enough to ignore a freshly shot crow.
I hope it will find North Bucks a welcoming home away from the crowded skies
of the Chilterns.

Caterpillars on nettles
Thu, 14 May 2009 18:58:23 +0100
I notice a lot of nettle leaves bound with what looks like silken
threads to hold the edges of the leaves together, and within a very
small caterpillar about 3/16" long.
Can anyone ID it for me. No picture, it's too small for my camera.

Bee-fly jabbing ... what?
Fri, 24 Apr 2009 23:15:48 +0100
Yesterday walking round a gravel pit at Bray (Berks) there were quite a lot
of bee-flies around. One I noted was hovering close to dead leaves, making
several faints towards the leaf and then a very close jab. On one occasion
there was no leaf and a grain or two of the sandy soil was dislodged. But
that might ...

Fox litter
Fri, 24 Apr 2009 14:48:17 +0100
I am sitting at my computer watching a vixen and her litter of 8 cubs.
This seems an inordinately high number and obviously there is likely to
be some that don't survive but they are all very boisterous and in fact
have paired up into 4 lots for fighting and rumble tumble. I always
thought a litter was c. 4 .. ...

No Frogs
Sat, 28 Mar 2009 08:57:07 +0000
I have a largish (2.5 m x 6 m x 1 m deep) garden pond, about 10 years
old.
Every year since the second year, it has had several dozen frogs
spawning. This year, as of today, nothing. The newts are active,
everything else seems OK. Frogs and toads are active in the area but not
a single frog in the pond.
Any ...

Real signs of Spring?
Sat, 14 Mar 2009 22:18:00 +0000 (GMT)
Here in Buckingham on Saturday 14th two signs of Spring:
1. Huge buff-tailed bumble bees bumbling about;
2. small white empty bird's egg left on a gravel bed.
