Pigeons and holly     Sat, 17 Nov 2007 23:34:57 +0100
An interesting sight on a freezing cold Friday morning - EIGHT wood pigeons in the same holly tree stripping berries. There did not seem to be any territorial aggro. so I wonder if they were related - this tree is a highly favoured nest site for pigeons and other birds. -- Rodney Blackall (retired meteorologis ...

The plastic bag free town     Mon, 12 Nov 2007 17:13:21 -0000
Interesting site about Modbury, the town that has banned plastic bags. The video of a speech by Ray Anderson on the "Why and How to" page is excellent. http://www.plasticbagfree.com/index.php and if anyone thinks this is OT for this ng check out the site. -- Regards Bob Hobden 17mls W. of London.UK ...

The Natural History Unit funding?     Tue, 06 Nov 2007 19:56:57 GMT
Hi, This subject was brought up on the Autumnwatch forum and I wondered what other people's thoughts are on this debacle! My email to POV at the BBC is quoted below. With reference to the above department and it's expected massacre of funding, I would like to remind the BBC why I, my friends and relatives ...

Accomodation near Rutland Water     Mon, 15 Oct 2007 19:25:03 +0100
If you are going 'birding' or similar around Rutland Water I can recommend the "Coach House" inn on the Morcott-Stamford road at South Luffenham. Reasonably priced rooms and meals, well presented, newly refurbished (but not smelling of paint). CLOSED Sunday 5pm to Monday noon (except by special arrangement). ...

id Butterfly in Italy please.     Sun, 7 Oct 2007 20:24:17 +0100
On a visit to Italy (Napoli) I saw two butterflies which I would like to identify. The first was a white one, about the size of a Large White, but it had dark lines radiating from it's rear end, where there was a dark spot. It had the effect of faking it's position 180 degrees. It was feeding on some small blo ...

Legal protection of red squirrels     Fri, 21 Sep 2007 07:31:59 -0700
Can anybody outline the maximum penalties for killing, injuring, etc a red squirrel for me, please? I'd be even more grateful if you could state the relevant legislation - as in "Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981, Section N.1.I.i" or whatever it happens to be. Sorry for the detailed nature of the request but I wan ...

Truffles in the UK? In Oxford?     Sun, 16 Sep 2007 16:55:34 +0100
I've been digging these up from under Cobnut trees that I planted after purchasing them from a nursery. The soil has not been touched in nearly 20 years with no pesticides or anything and it was only when I was putting in some spring flowering bulbs a few weeks ago that I dug the first one up. The smell gi ...
