A modelling material
Sat, 01 Aug 2009 15:27:42 +0100
A very long time ago when I was a child we occasionally used a
modelling material which was somewhat like plaster of paris but which
had a slightly sandy texture, set harder and stronger, and was more
cohesive so could be moulded over quite an open armature.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? If so, what was i ...

model planking
Thu, 30 Jul 2009 17:42:06 +0100
Someone was asking here recently about (cheap?) sources of
wood suitable for modelling.
I have come across the 6" long stirrers sold with coffee cups
these days which are about 1/4" wide. Enquiring of the
cafe proprietor, he said that he gets them in boxes of 1000 for
¡ê1-50p
1000 lots of 1/4" would be 250 in ...

PU foam

A couple of early thoughts on polyurethane foam as a modelling
material: first, it's not easy to stick; second, it stinks!
On the plus side you can build hills and embankments with fabulous
ease. Sod the scrunched-up newspaper and chicken wire approach! Hey,
I know that must be really old hat but two 8x4 sheet ...

Final installment in this months issue, finishes off with painting. Insists
an airbrush or aerosol must be used, brush painting just cant be good

GRP hills
Thu, 23 Jul 2009 21:00:50 +0100
Has anyone here tried GRP as a medium for building hills? I was
thinking that GRP moulded onto an exmet armature would be light and
easily removed for sections of hill concealing trackwork.
