Bridgeport table feed motor wiring
Sat, 19 Jul 2008 20:50:33 +0100
I wonder if anyone has a readable diagram, of how the spaghetti junction of
wires that lurks behind the speed control housing of a Bridgeport table
feed, should be wired to the microswitches.
I have downloaded several versions of a Bridggy handbook, one diagram claims
to have been "cleaned" but its of little ...

Helical Gears - Ivan Law
Fri, 18 Jul 2008 11:12:29 +0100
Ivan Law published a set of revised gear cutter buttons in Model Engineer
June 1990. In the article he mentioned he omitted the cutting of Helical
Gears from his book 'Gears and Gear Cutting'. There is hint in the article
of the possibility of further articles on the subject of helical gears in
ME.
Does any ...

Making a replacement gear for thread dial indicator
Thu, 17 Jul 2008 00:39:41 +0100
I'm currently fixing a number of issues on my recently acquired Colchester
Bantam 800 lathe; one of the problems I've found is that the gear on the
thread dial indicator has a tooth missing. I don't think that it's
repairable as it's some form of white metal (Mazak perhaps?) so I need to
make a new one. I've r ...

Thermite process in action
Tue, 15 Jul 2008 23:22:43 +0100
I see some interesting pictures of the thermite process in use to weld
the tramway sections on the steam railway through Portmadoc. See this
link http://www.isengard.co.uk/#News
I thought it was done in place, but this looks like it takes place in a
pot above and then is tapped or simply pours into place. It ...

Drilling the hard stuff
Tue, 15 Jul 2008 20:41:23 +0100
I need to drill a 3mm (or 1/8) hole in 58-62 Rockwell steel. Can't
anneal it.
Will carbide do? Do I need to use diamond?
If so, sources for a suitable drill? The hole must be pretty accurate,
maybe even reamed.
Ideas? It's only one or at most two holes, so buying EDM or similar
machinery, much as I'd li ...

How sealed is a sealed bearing
Tue, 15 Jul 2008 13:17:13 +0100
I have an oily problem with a dynamo on an old engine. Oil leaks from
the engine, past the drive gear, lubricates a ball bearing (which it
is supposed to do), defeats a felt seal and then soaks the dynamo
windings.
If I replace the ball bearing (an RLS4) with a sealed version will
this stop the oil flow and neg ...

Simple oscillating 45 degree engine
Mon, 14 Jul 2008 18:04:48 GMT
Hi
I`m looking for some info on building a oscillating based on these
plans:
http://npmccabe.tripod.com/45engine.htm
Most of it seems OK but I can`t understand the inlet and exhaust
arrangement. There is a detail box B which shows the exhaust as
straight but the inlet is a L shape. This is my second build ...

Follow-up Re:GT series carbide inserts.
Mon, 14 Jul 2008 04:38:24 GMT
I got in some of the XXGT series inserts this week at work. Have not
yet tried them.
Got some little (1/4" IC) 80 deg diamonds for the small boring
bars, some 3/8" ditto, for the larger boring bars, and some 1/2"IC square
ones (DoH! Meant to order the diamond shaped!)
Have not had a chance to use an ...
